EGM Reviews TMNT for GBA
The verdict?
Greg - 7.0 Crispin - 3.5 Shane - 5.0 Good: Excellent Graphics Bad: Slash. Rinse. Repeat. I think they are going to give a review for the console versions next month. |
"slash. rinse. repeat."
*shrug* the beat-em-up games are a bit more than that. you have to learn when to hit the bosses so you don't get killed too fast. |
Here's each of the guy's thoughts I didn't have time to type:
Greg: Haters begone: TMNT on GBA offers a gnarly (read:good) throwback to the bygone days of brawl-em-up classics like Final Fight- or, even better, a throwback to Konami's old Turtles arcade games, albiet without 3D movement (each mean bro is limited to action on two 2D planes.) Since the turtles are all about kicking but anyway, why not give 'em a good, simple action game? Especially one that has super-fluid animation, colorful levels, and tight control. And actually, it's like four games in one- each of the four turtles has his own unique moves, story line, and levels to fight through. Plus, each each dude has his own minigame- Raph goes motorcycle racing against Casey Jones, Leo's got a mouser shooting gallery and so on. Ultimately, though, TMNT's very nature as an old-school brawler might turn off potential fans. Some finicky modern gamers (ahem...Crispin) won't dig taking on wave after wave of mousers and Foot ninjas. Personally, I'll be taking on ol' Shred-head every time I take my GBA on a trip. Bodacious! 7.0/10 Crispin: As if the Turtles license here wasn't enough to suck you into a time warp, wait until you play this game. This side-scrolling, button smacking 2D brawler looks and plays like a Super NES title Konami has been sitting on since 1992. Levels work thusly: You traipse through sewer/labratories/alleys and whomp ninjas/robots/punks with your katana/nunchaku/staff. Clear an area and you move on to the next- unless you fall asleep first. Vehicle levels break up the monotony but aren't exciting either. Surely GBA can do more than this? 3.5/10 Shane: Let me be the voice or reason- Greg and Crispin are both overreacting here. TMNT is neither a rebirth of brawling brilliance nor the pinnacle of boring game design. In fact, it's a perfectly average beat-em-up that will likely keep fans of the cartoon enthralled. Smooth graphics and precise control make it easy on the eyes and thumbs, and the driving bits offset face-smashing monotory. Your mutagenic enjoyment won't go beyond a mild simmer, but I promise totally OK action throughout. 5.0/10 Ouch, there's a review for He-Man on GBA...well, it aint pretty. |
Eh, they didnt like the new Evil Dead game either and that was a good game.
I love EGM but they're a bit too finicky a lotta times. |

Just because GBAs always get low scores doesn't mean they are bad. I hate to listen to Small minded Critics with no taste.
|
But what if they are right and this game really isnt that good? Just cause its tmnt doesnt mean it will be good...it could be a horrible game. I love beat em ups so it probobly will be a great game. I hope they like the console games though.
|
I MISS EGM!
WE DON'T GET IT IN MY AREA ANYMORE!!   Anyway, good balance! One liked it. One Hated it. one thought it was alright. |
It sounds about right though, honestly... it all depends on preference. EGM reviewers are more "sophisticated" (yeah sure) so they wouldn't enjoy a simple beat-em-up game like TMNT while a lot of other people would like it fine.
Consider the fact that a lot of people don't play a ton of games, and are only gonna get the TMNT games because they're TMNT. Are any of the TMNT games for any system gonna be a Zelda or MGS-style "classic" game? Honestly, I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell. But will they be good, fun, simple distractions for a few hours? Almost guaranteed. And that's fine. If I want Zelda, I'll play Zelda. It won't hurt my enjoyment of the TMNT game any. I'm not looking forward to TMNT thinking it'll change the world of gaming... I'm just expecting it to entertain me, and I'm sure it will. |

Besides, it's doing one thing. It's bringing back beat-em-ups! :D |
I hope IGN has a review up soon.
|
Gamespot will probably give decent rating to all the versions, they tend to be more nastolgic over there.
|
I find myself agreeing with EGM more than anyother game magazine... IGN I tend to think of as complete and utter morons, of course everyone is subject to their own opionion, void where prohibited, offer only valid untill 6/6/666
|
... You don't really find a gaming site wich has more professional reviewers than IGN. If they give low scores, there will be a long explanation for it. If you disagree with them, it certainly doesn't mean they are morons.
|
like I said, that was my own opinion, feel free to disagree. I won't argue it.
|
Tryin' to pick a fight, Karpo?
|
Nope, but if I said that people in WWF are morons, Im pretty sure I would get few comments, even if it is my opinion.
|
Different Entirely, mine is based on reasons, Ive read their reviews, and previews and I have reasons I don't like them.
You on the other hand would just make a comment like that out of spite. You seriously need to drop whatever it is you have against me, everytime I have an opinion you disagree with, you pull this crap. |
What? I have never "pulled any crap" on you. You just dissed something I hold great respect to, and I will defend it.
About WWF, It is my opion that it is pointless fake fighting and that it's poor entertainment. But because many people do like and respect it, I avoid dissing it. |
You've called me a liar, Called me computer illiterate(but you probably spelled right) and several other encounters like this. Other people have asked what you have against me before, and to be honest I dont know, I dont care. I just asume our personalities aren't meant to get along or something.
But now we've gotten wayyy to off topic |
