mutating radical
Just a hypothetical question here; if the mirage character radical were brought into another tmnt continuity, what would be the ideal animal to mutate her into, given her powers, background, powers and personality?('don't mutate her' is not an answer)
|
Don't mutate her.

Bring back Radical? Worst idea.
Mutate Radical? Worst idea. Worst idea squared. |
thanks for the great opinions guys :). now, any suggestions?

So basically what you're asking is, "What is the least culturally insensitive animal to turn a Native American woman into?"
Because let's face it, that's what'd happen. |

Why should she be mutated though?

This is the IDW TMNT, not Nick. Except for Bebop and Rocksteady, there are no human mutants.
Plus, there are no toys, so nobody has to worry about "We want to introduce a new female character but we need sexist little boys to buy the toys! Oh noes! I knows, turn her into a duck/beaver/raccoon/squirrel/pangolins!" All my dislike for Radical aside, this question is quite obtruse. I mean, at this point, why aren't we discussing "When will April mutate into a cat?" Or "What animal should Casey mutate into?" IF IDW decides to revisit "human mutants", it can only be done through Null at this point. Plus, there are more prominent and interesting characters who already exist as former human mutants. Dogpound/Rahzar, Fishface, Muckman, Tiger Claw (I think)... |
isn't it obvious?

Radical is already a mutant. She's referred to as a "Supermutant" in the Mirage comics.
There's a Mirage pin-up page drawn by Eastman with Radical/Carnage fighting and the tagline is, "Battle of the Supermutants!" |

I'm not all that familiar with her, but with her abilities (powers?) wasn't she more in line with being something of a human superhero type? Think she aught to stay in that category, or play up more of a superhero thing, rather than mutating her. She can hang out with Silver Sentry or whoever. Edit: Wasn't she a shape shifter or something? (As if that idea wasn't culturally tied.) If Nick brought her in, I could kind of see her having a few different forms, instead of mutations, for various reasons. For example, maybe a fox (in homage to other TMNT characters) for swiftness. Though I'd prefer they brought her in as an adult character... adult women (human, mutant, or otherwise) are still sorely lacking, save for rare appearances (which she'd probably be) and barely there side characters. Actually, I think her powers were more electricity-based, and she had speed and strength. And she flies. Powers of the natural world- wind, lightening and thunder. |
Ah, in that case playing on the superhero angle would definitely make more sense than mutation imo.

Yeah, in her first appearance she was treated as a superhero of sorts, while in a later one she became more shamanic in nature- apparently she was "chosen" by a Native American spirit/god to oppose Complete Carnage, who had been "chosen" by an evil/dark spirit to fight as their respective "champions" in the human world. I just finished reading that one, where she calls on the Thunderbird of her people to ask for help in defeating him. The turtles help her fight him, while Donatello uses a shamanic spell to contain or capture him. And she talks about the dream world. Her first appearance was much more like a standard superhero fight.
Either way, she doesn't strike me as the type of character that would work well as a typical mutant. She already has enough powers, and her heritage works best with something more mystical or super-heroic. No need to mutate her on top of it. I could see Hun getting mutated, like in Turtles Forever, but honestly, that just came off as kind of cheesy, and it would be even more so in Nick or IDW. Woody might work in that world. |
