Differences between Bebop and Rocksteady

Is there any real difference between these two aside from one being a rhino and the other being a warthog? I was wondering because both are morons, but in the OT, we never really delve into their personalities. Just that they are clumsy, incompetent and stupid.

Take Beavis and Butthead for example. Both were morons, but Beavis but less intelligent, more submissive to Butthead and he was a little more polite around strangers, while Butt-head was more intelligent, more rude and arrogant That and Beavis has an alter ego and Butt-head doesn't. And Beavis gets more hyperactive while Butt-head is usually calm.

But with Bebop and Rocksteady, what is the difference between them when it comes to personality? Are the IDW versions different? Are the 2012 versions different? When it comes to skill and strength, both are just brutes, though I imagined Rocksteady would be a stronger since rhinos are bigger and stronger than warthogs. But they basically had the same personality. Neither one was really more intelligent than the other, or more aggressive or had defining character traits.

I've never read the comics and only watched a few episodes of the 2012 cartoon, so I can't really judge Bebop and Rocksteady in those versions. There didn't seem to be major differences between the duo in the 1987 cartoon, only minor ones. rosencrantz and guildenstern from Hamlet had similar personalities.

I atually posed that questions a couple of year ago on this forum. There was very little aside from Bebop owning Slash until the 2012 Nicktoon and minor differences like Rocksteady's military service in IDW.

In the OT, Rocksteady seemed more like the leader and slightly more intelligent than Bebop. Bebop would usually go along with whatever Rocksteady was saying.

So basically Rocksteady was Butthead, and Bebop was Beavis.

IMO, for the OT, Bebop seemed more philisophical compared to Rocksteady. That episode with the....Grybyx (I think) showed that and a few other times. Personally, I always found Rocksteady to be the dumber one of the two, but I also saw him as being the leader somewhat.

Sounds about right to me.

The "Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything" series has actually fleshed them out and shown some differences. Pretty good job, I say...

Whenever Rocksteady/Bebop were alone together it was usually Rocksteady suggesting something and Bebop going along with him. I very rarely remember any episodes where Bebop made the first move about something.

Here's a difference: one of them likes the color yellow but the other likes blue, the one who likes blue hates yellow and the one who likes yellow hates blue as they were arguing about what color to paint the walls in White Belt, Black Heart.

But to me Rocksteady was the dumber one, but I agree about him being leader of the two. Bebop came across as the passive one, imo. Between the two, I preferred Bebop to Rocksteady.

Not much difference between both, but Rocksteady seemed to be more assertive/talkative and more of a leader, as others have suggested. Never noticed a difference of intelligence between both. Always felt both were equally stupid.

It seems somewhat inconsistent as there are time where Rocksteady seems more intelligent and other times Bebop is more clever. I have noticed Rocksteady seems to be more aggressive at times. I always felt like there should have been more of a difference between these two, other than one being a rhino and the other being a warthog.

Bebop I think is more passive and calmer than Rocksteady most of the time. Sometimes Rocksteady has a habit of talking and letting certain information slip.

I've noticed Bebop is a little quicker to resort to violence. In the episode "Plan 6 From Outer Space" the duo have to infiltrate Channel 6 cloaked as their human selves, so they get jobs there, and during the interview Bebop gets a little impatient, so Rocksteady has to calm him down and remind him to be more professional.

Yabuturtle 07-16-2016 01:09 PM

But in Return of the Fly, where Bebop and Rocksteady watched those self improvement tapes, I noticed Rocksteady would get angry often and Bebop would have to remind him a couple times to calm down. And in Super Bebop and Mighty Rocksteady, as well as Krangenstein lives, Rocksteady seems to have a habit of letting important information slip out.

I always imagined Rocksteady being more prone to anger and would be the leader and Bebop would be more passive and suggest Rocksteady certain things and would be more clumsy. Sometimes Rocksteady would show some signs of intelligence where in Shreeka's Revenge, Shreeka grabbed a hot coal and Rocksteady said she shouldn't do that. Despite that her hands were impervious to heat, Rocksteady astutely remarked that her ring wasn't and it melted.

I just find it strange two well known characters really don't have defining character traits as they both nearly have the same kind of personality. Neither one seems to be smarter than the other, or that it's inconsistent because there are times Rocksteady appears to be smarter than Bebop and vice versa.

Well, not to point out the obvious here, but they were both uneducated members of a street gang, with very few skills beyond instigating violence. So, yeah, they were pretty much cut from the same mold as individuals, seeing how they basically both had the same background. Other than minor personality quirks like Rocksteady's mouthyness and anger-management problems, and Bebop being the more calm and passive of the two, that's really all we got.

I understand they are from the same background, although one would think their personalities would be a little bit more defined. Even Beavis and Butt-head had clearly established personalities. I guess one could say that Rocksteady would be more aggressive and impulsive and Bebop is more passive and less impulsive. Rocksteady has the habit of of accidentally letting information slip out. Maybe one could say Bebop is a little more cowardly. He was afraid of his own image on Turtles on Trial and has a habit of saying "Mama!" a lot.

I recall a couple of times of Rocksteady almost letting information slip, yes.

To be honest, Rocksteady and Bebop having borderline identical personalities never bothered me.

Powder 07-17-2016 03:43 AM

It's almost as if they were developed to be the mascots of an at times shallow toy commercial...

I don't mind characters like that either. Scratch and Grounder from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and rosencrantz and guildenstern from Hamlet had similar personalities as well and it didn't bother me.
