Best James Avery replacement in the classic TMNT cartoon

Well, just as the title says, this is where you post your thoughts on who was the best fill-in for James Avery's Shredder in the classic TMNT cartoon.

Personally, I've always felt Bill Martin was the best replacement overall. He tries to imitate Avery in terms of delivery, but he also seems to be adding his own touch to the role. He sounds more violent and menacing than Avery, but he also has his fun moments. So yeah, personally I think Bill managed to do a great job filling in for Avery while also managing to sound unique.

Jim Cummings may have sound pretty close to Avery, but even though it's a good imitation, I really prefer Bill's more unique approach. Plus, Cummings sounds a little bit too raspy, which made him sound forced at times. It's still good, but not as successful as Bill, IMO.

Dorian Harewood is a little bit deeper than Avery, but it's still a pretty good attempt.

Townsend Coleman sounds a little bit too high, but his delivery is pretty good.

So yeah, who do you think was the best Shredder replacement in the classic Turtles cartoon????

Townsend. Normal Shredder hit quite a few high vocal points in his time. So it wasn't too unusual to hear Townsend do him.

Cool. Very interesting to hear that you like Towny more. Most of the people I've seen are not too fond of his Shredhead, but IMO, he was cool.

Dorian Harewood. The voice so nice, he replaced Avery twice.

It rhymes!!!!

And Harewood was pretty cool. And this is not the only time he would take over from Avery (if you've seen the Iron Man cartoon, then you'll see what I mean). :D

I think Townsend is the overall best replacement of shredder as we know him during the main seasons, but I think Bill Martin is the best as a successor to Shredder when he becomes darker during the Red Sky seasons.

Not to brag though, I think I can do a pretty good Shredder. There are some videos on my YouTube channel where I impersonate him.

Yeah, that's the main reason why I love Bill. He managed to give him a threatening edge while also managing to be entertaining at the right times.

That sounds cool.

Jim Cummings. Probably because I had a few of his episodes ripped onto VHS as a kid. Nostalgia bias or whatever. He put in a solid performance though, I think I'd go for it either way.

Yeah, he was a little bit rough at the edges at times, but he wasn't bad.

I was surprised when I found Townsend Coleman wasn't gonna do 80's Shredder for the second crossover.

But I think 2k12 shredder's Voice Actor will beautifully nail it as his 80's counterpart.

Yeah, it is kinda weird that they didn't bring one of the other fill-ins back. I really expected Bill Martin to reprise, but thanks to his passing, that will never happen. :(

Still, I think Kevin Michael Richardson will still do a great job as the 80's Shredder.

In one of the earlier episodes, Season 2, I think, Michelangelo disguises himself as Shredder and sneak attacks the other turtles as a prank. My kids were recently watching it, and I said to my wife, "Wow, Michelangelo does a decent Shredder impression." That was when I remembered that Townsend voiced the Shredder a little bit. So he (And, I guess, Michelangelo) has (have) my vote.

Townsend Coleman, though Bill Martin is a close second. I thought Coleman sounded more menacing than the others.

Not only that, but ol' Shredhead did a pretty good Mikey impression in "Cowabunga Shredhead"!!!! :D

I'm surprised how many people like Towny here. I must admit, I liked all the fill-ins, but Bill was my favorite. Still, really cool to hear all your thoughts. ;)

I actually just watched that episode recently. I didn't think he sounded that much like Shredder (or rather like James Avery).

Yeah, but that's because it was Mikey imitating Shredder. :D

Definitely Jim Cummings without a doubt. He did the best Avery impression. Townsend wasn't a great Shredder and did a worse Krang.
