How do people see the movies, TNM and 2007 continuity?

I was wondering what people thought here about the continuity of the first three movies, coupled with the TNM TV series and the 2007 movie.

From my understanding both the TNM and the 2007 series were meant to be continued from the first three movies. There were nods to the first three in both TNM and 2007, supporting that they followed directly on.

Is the 2007 movie meant to be after TNM, or, after the third movie are we meant to assume that TNM and 2007 are two separate universes, and that after TMNT III the universe splits into two parallel timelines?

Or, this: do you even see as the movies, TNM and 2007 as all completely separate, therefore being three separate timelines?

There obviously is no right or wrong way to look at it, and at this point I don't suppose it matters too much, but I was just curious really.

I ignore TNM I have never seen the 2007 movie from what I saw in reviews its just a generic bring 8 monsters back to the portal movie with the TMNT slapped on it.

As far as I'm concerned they could both potentially be loose sequels, no harm in letting people pick & choose if it makes them happy.

Nowadays you could see the 2007 movie being loosely continued in the Nick universe...3 years later when the Turtles, April/Casey are all 18.

That's an interesting point!

TNM was definitely piggybacking off of the trilogy, but I consider it to be a different universe.

TMNT 07 is just blatantly a standalone universe. But many fans disagree.

Choose your own adventure.

April and Casey are like 30 in TMNT 07. Plus the trillion other contradictions.

But hey, they're animated in the same medium so they must be canon with one another.

Shark_Blade 08-24-2016 09:22 PM

I see TNM in the trash can, completely non canon.

I can sort of see Nick becoming 2k7 movie, solely because of April being a ninja.

ToTheNines 08-24-2016 09:27 PM

But Karai.........

And Splinter is a completely different character.

And the Triceratons in the two versions don't jive.

And Leo's not a geek in 07.

And Donnie's gap... and April crush.

Raph's shell crack.

ICE CREAM ****ING KITTY.

(I could go on.)

TNM for me is a seperate continuity completely branched off from the 90s films.

2007 I'm a little torn on. It's all up to interpretation with that movie. Really, it's just a well done TMNT story made by people that love TMNT. I never got any of the criticism towards 2007.

There have been many topics about this but yes to everything.

TNM is basically a continuation of the trilogy and there's plenty of references but nothing explicit. It actually fits pretty well in tone and even turtle personality.

07 kept it ambiguious and the director said it could be seen as a continuation and even gave some references but based on the Expanded Universe released it doesn't look like it was and better fits as a new continuity.

07 as a finale for the Nick show, well I guess we need to see how it ends but it's not just that both shows are CG, the characters are fairly similar personality wise. Obviously the writers aren't going to put anything explicit but if there are no big contradictions (and all shows have contradictions) I say why not.

So none of these will ever be explicitly canon with each other, at least not officially so it's up to your headcanon. In mine, TNM follows the trilogy and 07 will continue from Nick. Hell the coming out of the shells tour and its sequel/making of mockumentary/in character late night appearances I'd consider part of the musical turtles universe with the Christmas special and Turtles Tunes. And the Japanese OVAs in continuity with the TMNT manga based on the OT. It's all fun

I don't know who made this but it seems a good point to link to it.

I view TNM and 2007 as possible 2 continuations of the live action trilogy (so timeline split after TMNT 3).

Must admit I never thought to link 2007 and the Nick show, I think there's too many contradictions at the moment (as others have pointed out) but we'll see where the show ends up. That video is pretty cool though :)

ABrown 08-25-2016 09:52 AM

I assume that The Next Mutation was supposed to be in the live movies' continuity. However, I don't consider it canon.

The 2007 CGI movie I really don't consider it to be either in continuity or canon to the three live movies.

No.

Thanks for the input everyone. It is interesting to see how others view the universe.
I didn't state it in my original post, but I am inclined to go with this: the first three live action movies and TNM are of the same continuos universe, and the 2007 is something unto itself (which I actually would like to see and know more about).

Casey 08-25-2016 11:53 AM

To me everything is separate. Barron's 1990 is the one that matters to me. I've seen SotO, 3, TNM, and 2007 all numerous times, but nothing compares to the original and the others will always be second rate to me.

There are a bunch of prequel comics, check 'em out.

SurrealBrain 08-25-2016 06:53 PM

Sadly, I never got to read the prequel comics. Apparently, they're held up as why the 2007 film can't be canon to the old movies.

Me? I had always considered the 2007 film to at least be broad strokes canon with the first three films, but while I'd like to make theories figuring out how the prequel comics could work, I'll need to read them before I feel I have any right to.

But I doubt it'll ever be officially confirmed or denied.

Andrew NDB 08-25-2016 07:50 PM

It's not that complicated.

TNM was always intended to be a continuation of the 3 live action films. Period.

TMNT 07 was always intended to be a continuation of at least the first 2 live action films, then the 3rd one too, later into production.

Both don't work together. After TMNT 3 you can watch TNM or TMNT 07, but you can't watch both (at least, with the continuity working... unless you just assume Venus just left at some point in between TNM and TMNT 07).

Nobody claimed it was complicated. I was just curious as to how others see it, as we are pretty much left to our own devices as to how it should run, continuity wise.
