Rooftop Foot Ambush: Mirage vs. 1990 Movie

I was rewatching scenes from the 1990 movie recently and thought how neat it was to have the story centered around Raphael, from losing his sai to rescuing April from the Foot, only to have Splinter kidnapped by them, and getting ambushed and beaten to the point of unconsciousness on the rooftops. Once, he regains consciousness at the farmhouse, the story shifts to Leonardo reflecting on his mistakes and getting Splinter back.

Whereas originally in Mirage, the 2003 show, and the 2012 show, it is Leonardo being ambushed. I haven't fully read the comics, but I know that in the 2003 show, his ambush is very personal, since he refused Shredder's offer to join the Foot and the Turtles and Splinter had a water tower crash on him.

Which do you prefer?

4 Kids Tales of Leo is great.

Personally, I preferred Raphael being the one who was beat down instead of Leo.

Something about the 1990 Rooftop ambush hit the feels much harder for me, even if its not the source material.

Don't really have a preference, both work well for their story. My 1st exposure to the scene was the movie though, which will always have a special place in my heart because of the care Barron put into it.

I agree totally. And the work Barron (et al) put into the first movie is what raises it far above all the others (and was what was omitted in the recent attempts at a cinematic treatment).

Steve Baron's TMNT 2: the one film I would choose to "bring back from the dead".

I have a co-worker who jokes that he'd love to be able to visit alternate universes where the Nick Cage Superman movie or Will Smith as Neo in the Matrix exist.

I grew up with the movie so Raphael holds a special place to me. But I just finished the second Mirage TMNT Ultimate Classics Collection and read the rooftop fight and I have to say it was really good. I still go with Rapheal

I'd have to go with the 1990 movie.

Raph being ambushed made total sense for the movie since he likes to storm off and I could see him being cocky to the point where he bites off more than he can chew which they did so I felt it was an acceptable change.

Never thought about it much when reading and seeing other incarnations but I soon came to realize how damn near impossible it would be to throw Leo through a side window. Having Raph thrown through a skylight was a welcome change that actually made sense.

Mirage, I just love the paneling.

I would still love to see Batman Triumphant one day. :D

So I just re-read the Mirage issues: Leonardo Micro and the following issues up to #11??? The issue where April is telling their story in Northampton writing in her journal about what her and the others are up to.

For the roof top attack I will have to say the Mirage version is the best. It is better than the 2k3 or first movie. The reason I think I like the Mirage version the best is bc of the story telling. The story is broken down into two parts and is set on Christmas eve. In Story A you have Leo exercising, but quickly turn into a fight for his life and Leo is slowly and steady pushed further and further until he is broken. Story B show April, Splinter and the Turtles having fun, decorating on Christmas Eve preparing for Christmas dinner, but by the end of the Leonardo micro both stories collide at the end of the issue.

The 2k3 series is similar for Leo, but the others are just having a normal morning/day. This takes place on rainy day, nothing special or intimate like Christmas. At the end of the fight Leo is thrown through a window just like in the comic and whispers "Shredder....is back...." very scary and disturbing to the turtles. The movie is sorely missing this!.

The Movie is the worse version in my opinion. In this version Raph gets mad and blows off steam and the roof top fight is mostly just cut away and not really shown. Raph accuser most of his injuries off screen. In the comic and show both you saw Leo fight for his very existence! The turtles are not really even doing anything while this is going, they are simply watching tv.

Now as for the apartment fight scene I think I am going to have to give the edge to the 2k3, bc of the foot elite and shredder, as well as splinter.

In the mirage comics there is no foot elite except in the Leonardo micro and they are barely even shown, except for throwing snowballs.

The movie is missing the Shredder, foot elite and splinter as well. Tatsu is a nice addition and the fire in the scene is really well done, but unfortunately these missing characters really hinder this scene.

As for NorthHampton Arc I feel like this is where the movie shined.
In the movie you have April Narrating and sketching out each turtle giving a very personal feeling and setting for the story. I love the truck scene where Don is arguing with Casey and nearly kills him with the truck.
But the best scene and the one that sets the movie apart from the other two is the camp fire scene. Splinter appearing to them with a very personal and solemn message to his suns is very heart jerking.

The Mirage version is very good as well and I love April narrating and writing in her journal. I like seeing each turtle deal with their defeat in their own way and I love how in this version it is Raph and Casey work on the truck, just makes more sense. Also in this version Raph drops the truck(An old Jeep Comanche) and almost kills Casey, but instead of just going a few feet Raph breaks through the barn doors, DESTROYS the windmill that Don just repaired and fixed, but the cherry on top was Raph ultimately totaling out the truck by going into a ravine/ditch. Raph- Do you think they know about the windmill? Casey-Couldn't miss it. Raps-Are they mad?? Casey-Saw them carrying guns and a noose...

I have more to say about tales of Leo and the Northhampton version, but everyone knows it so well and this post is long enough...:lol:

Wow, thanks for summarizing all of that for us! I didn't think of it that way before. Each version excels in their own way.
