I'd rather switch out Alan Scott for Kyle Rayner just so the former could appear on Stargirl, but otherwise this is a solid lineup.

Tho the fact that Marc Guggenheim is involved has me somewhat concerned.

I was just telling someone, "How much do you want to bet that Alan Scott is only there because they're going to go with the gay version of him?" then I re-read the original article here closer. Jeeze... just terrible. Now Gay Alan is going to be reinforced on everything and everyone.

Alan Scott is the original. A husband, a father (and of 2 super popular superheroes... Jade and Obsidian).

Jessica and Baz there for diversity and women empowerment (and again, Geoff Johns' residuals), Alan for LGBTQ, and Guy there as the lone straight white male presence. And how much do you want to bet (as a result) they're going to make him act super dopey and goofy, and constantly be the butt of the others' jokes?

TO BE FAIR...... that's always Gardner's role anyway, to a point. :lol:

EXCEPT that in the comics no matter what a jerkoff or numbskull he is or how badly he's sometimes portrayed as the dumbest guy in the room, he always, ALWAYS comes through in the clutch. You go back over some of the biggest events or stories or threats in DC history for 30+ years, and Guy either dives in headfirst to take on the bad guys who make everybody else piss their spandex panties in fear without batting an eyelash - Doomsday, Hal/Parallax, etc. - OR swoops in to make the last-second save when everything seems lost (Eclipso).

Sure, he's a bozo sometimes. But the key to his gimmick has always been that he ALWAYS comes through when it matters. He's not JUST an abrasive idiot. He's "The Fist of the Guardians". And when he can't rely on his super-powers he gets by on sheer force of will.

He out-razzled Sinestro's "ghost" for control of Sinestro's yellow power ring, for god's sake. The guy the ring was created for in the first place. Gardner took it away (AND conned Lobo out of it in the process, although outsmarting Lobo isn't much of a trick :lol:) because he simply wouldn't be denied. Hell, when he died during the "Imperiex War", he fought his way back from Hell. Literal HELL.

He can't JUST be presented as an idiot or the character doesn't work. What he is, is the personification of sheer, undeniable willpower, more so than ANY of the other Lanterns. No matter the situation presented, he always finds a way to win because he simply doesn't know how to lose and won't accept it as an option. He has to win. "Because I'm Guy freakin' Gardner!"

I would love - LOVE - a sincere and proper live-action portrayal. But as you said... I suspect they have ulterior motives and I absolutely do not trust them. He'll be there JUST to be the dumb comic relief and the guy who's always wrong. That's it. And that sucks.

He did ruin Arrow, but not because of "Olicity." "Olicity" was bad because the writers kept making Felicity insufferably irritating at every turn after they actually got together.

I don't know... I mean Gardner definitely was in the 80s and 90s... but post-Rebirth, they made Gardner kind of a badass in the GLC books. Lost the bowl cut, dropped the goofiness (for the most part).

He shouldn't have lost the bowl cut. I'm living proof that you can be godlike while looking marginally ridiculous. :lol:

But yeah, the ONE thing I can never take away from Geoff Johns is that he did a lot to restore Guy's place of prominence in the DCU. He really "got" the character, for the most part, and took away a little bit of the "Flanderization" that lesser writers sometimes attached to him.

Even in the 90s, though, Guy was already very quietly the best character in the DC lineup. "Guy Gardner Reborn", "Eclipso: The Darkness Within", the first 16 AMAZING issues of his solo series (and even JUST "Yesterday's Sins" is golden if a person couldn't be bothered to read the other 12 issues for some dumb reason), Jurgens's run on "Justice League America"... Guy was on a VERY hot run until editorial mandate turned him into "Warrior".

Giffen's Justice League International was responsible for a lot of the "damage", although at times in that book he was still given more depth and was always prominently featured. But it was in the books I cited above where Guy finally was presented as having his sh*t together and being not only capable, but someone you might not LIKE having on your side, but a guy you'd NEED on your side. And in a lot of the cases where they showed him being at odds with other JLA members, or Jordan, truth is Guy was 100% right in those situations, most of the time. He may have handled it like a petulant child, but he was right on principle almost every time. He even gave up his GL ring when he really didn't have to, just because he felt like he had to abide by his word. That's what a real man does.

Eclipso was a huge coming-out for Guy's character. That whole entire Summer, man. Getting kicked out of the Corps, getting "Eclipsed", being told to f*ck off by the JLA, taking it on himself to swipe Sinestro's Power Ring, coming back to save Superman (and in turn everyone else) from Eclipso when everyone had already told him to f*ck off, saving the day and - as usual - not even getting any appreciation whatsoever proved the character's heart, to me. He was always one of the best kinds of heroes - one who does the right thing because it's The Right Thing, even when NOBODY cares enough to appreciate it. Sure, he loves the accolades... but he hardly ever gets any, and still, even when his "friends" treat him like sh*t, he saves their asses anyway. Even Superman, back when they barely got along. Y'all know I love Superman, but he was often much of a dick to Gardner back then and Guy was forever jumping in for him anyway. He even took the first punch from Doomsday. Seeing Guy and Superman become genuine friends much later on was nice, because it showed that they'd each grown a lot as people.

People always mark out for Batman for being the "most human" of all the DC heroes, but I disagree. It's always been Guy Gardner. He's the everyman, the true "hard luck hero". Always well-meaning but always misunderstood, more reasons than most to just say "f*ck it" and turn villain, but always does the right thing because The Right Thing is important, more so than appreciation or accolades or even the respect of your peers. He often never had ANY of those things. But he never quits, never gives up, and never lets the bad guys win.

The good ones know how to illustrate all of that with the way they write Guy Gardner. The hacks just make him a mouthy jerk. But he's ALWAYS had that depth and those layers. It's just easier to make him a stereotpyical Dumb Jock. But guys like Jurgens, Dixon, Giffen and yes, even Geoff Johns understand who he is and how to present him to his full potential.

I have a lot of love for Kyle and Hal and always will. But to me, Guy will always be the One True Green Lantern. He's far from a perfect person but that's what makes him such a fantastic and relatable character.

That's more Peter Tomasi than Geoff Johns. In addition to being the GL group editor, Tomasi led the GLC books that brought Guy front and center as writer.

As opposed to Hal. Whose character is his lack of character.

Green Lantern: HBO Max Series Reportedly Casting Black Woman as New Main Character

HBO Max is reportedly casting a Black woman as the new main character for the upcoming Green Lantern series. The Direct obtained some new information about the upcoming project. While Green Lantern will feature a host of established Lantern characters including Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, Alan Scott, and Jessica Cruz, a new name has popped up. In their report, a character named Bree Jarta is being used as a codename for the Black female character. As a half-human and half-alien Lantern, it would seem she’ll have to grapple with those multiple identities. There are also hints that she would be partnered with Gardner during the series and that would inject some familiarity for longtime fans. (It should be indicated that The Direct notes this isn’t newly-minted Lantern Sojourner Mullein.)

So Alan Scott is all about being a gay character in danger from homophobia, Bree Jarta is all about being an oppressed woman of color dealing with racism, and Guy Gardner is all about being a dumb "alpha male" white guy.

You can't have a show without following all of these things these days.

I've wanted a new live-action Superman TV show for 25 years, and now we're getting one and I absolutely do not care.

I've wanted a Green Lantern show for almost as long, and now we're getting one, and I absolutely do not care.

Guy Gardner is my favorite Green Lantern, and I've wanted to see him in live-action forever... and again, I absolutely do not care.

Supposedly, I'm the prime target for these shows, the guy who should be the most excited of all. And not only am I not excited, I'm angry. I wish these things didn't even exist.

Terrible. Ever since "Smallville", with this sh*t. With these terrible, off-brand versions of characters presented for the message board generation instead of actual fans.

Trash, all of it. Except the first season of Flash, that was somehow pretty good. But I'm quite certain by now that was a complete accident. Like most good thigs.

Superman and Lois dogged a small bullet they fired this crazy SJW chick writer who wanted more diversity in the show and tried to get Martha and Jonathan race changed to black.

I heard. I'm pretty glad I don't care about what promises to be a terrible show anyway. They might have dodged one bullet but I'm sure the clip is loaded.

Possibly the biggest Superman fan alive (and a huge Green Lantern fan as well), and you'd have to pay ME a substantial amount of money to watch either of these upcoming abortions. Something is off. And it ain't me.
