So far prevalent rumor that it is not Virtua Fighter 6 per se, but another updated version of Virtua Fighter 5, originally released 12 years ago.

Maybe Sega will do the same thing, as they did with new expansion for Phantasy Star Online 2, which is basically completely new game treated like an addon to keep the old fanbase and a famous name.

The problem, however, is that barely anyone play Virtua Fighter this days, so this maneuver is kind of worthless. But we shall see. Hopefully the game is good - more fighting games, especially 3D ones, the better.

I am legit curious as to how popular Virtua Fighter really is. Virtua Fighter 5 vanilla was released in 2006 and the last update was in 2012.

It was always a dark horse, behind Tekken and others.
But nowadays it might get popular, since only viable competition is Tekken and it've been running for too long.

ARGH this better not bite them in the butt.

Like Capcom wanted to release a new Darkstalkers game, but first they released yet another collection of the older games. No one bought it cause they already owned the old games and wanted a NEW game but Capcom saw it as 'I guess no one likes Darkstalkers anymore'.

I hope SEGA doesn't do a similar thing where they release a superVF5 where everyone just wants 6 already, Super5 bombs and rather than just do the new game they'll think 'I guess no one likes VF anymore'.

I kinda find it funny that the name "Virtua" is still in vogue after all these years. Now I want a new Virtua Racing.

I guess, Sega wants to gauge interest before committing to development of VF6, but it might be just Sega being Sega and making dumb decisions.

That's probably exactly what will happen. Sadly.

Believe me, I don't wanna be right. I'd love a Virtua Fighter 6 with some cool new martial arts fighters.

I played the remaster of 5 and beat the arcade mode in 15 minutes.

So any word on what's the general consensus? Like is SEGA (or whoever) pleased with how Virtua Fighter 5 fared or are they considering this a flop?

So far it seems people are pleased: gameplay wasn't ruined and online is good. Sega themselves said, that it was fairly successful.
The only thing that harms this game is its exclusivity.

But we shall see - good reception not always transforms into sequel. Besides, if its released on PS5 only it will be useless for most people.

So 6 is really happening now. Actual 3D fighting is alive and well.

This looks pretty great, actually. It looks like it might actually be like old-school VF or even old-school Tekken, pre-Nanco nerfing everything and making everything ridiculously easy. I even see some shades of things added from MK!
