This might be one of first DC movies released by Paramount if merger happens before September 30 like Elison plans to
I never thought how gross an actual realistic clayface movie would actually be. So far it seems like it'd fit the Pattison universe better even though we know this is DCU.
Do they think this is going to be their "Venom"?
Assuming the best here, it will be Sony's Venom done right. If it is received well and the main character is not somehow "redeemed" then audiences can look forward to this Clayface one day clashing with the DCU Batman.
I mean it's such an odd choice for a movie, I'm guessing the script must be very good because otherwise I don't see how they thought audiences would want this. I'm not even sure and I like clayface just fine.

The timing is certainly bizarre. Rolling out the red carpet for industry artsy fartsy guys to do random stuff in a franchise/universe should generally happen after said franchise/universe is already well established and thriving and can both afford a "weird" turn and the movie can benefit from the goodwill already established around it. This is coming when Gunn's Superman bombed, nobody cared about Creature Commandos, Peacemaker season 2 sucked, and Supergirl will probably underperform and be quickly forgotten.
If they gave the new DCU Batman a small part in this and teased the hell out of that, that might do something. And be something. |
It's just a dumb thing to put resources into. They've tried flicks like this for a LONG time and they've succeeded basically twice - the first "Joker" flick (and that had strange traction because of the way of it's era) and the Venom flicks, which were basically throwaway popcorn movies.
Even when it's "Catwoman", no one wants "supervillain" movies. In some ways "Clayface" could even be a great horror franchise, but you just can't parse out the "Comic book" from the content most times. You want them in their environment. |
This story seems to be based on the BTAS version of the character. Which was a great story, of course but it remains questionable who the audience for this film is supposed to be.
Eek, I just watched both parts of Feat Of Clay last night! I frogot this was a thing!
So it SOUNDS like this may end up like your average Sony supervillain movie. Apparently he only actually becomes Clayface for about 60 seconds at best, and there's no mention at all of Batman or even Bruce Wayne (who Gunn has lately been saying isn't going to be from Gotham City?).
