TMNT #5 preview and discussion

New bad guy is a nasty piece of work. Fun fact - this is 300th released issue in the IDW series!

CyberCubed 12-18-2024 08:21 PM

These 5 issues really should of been part of a mini-series rather than start the new ongoing with them. The new #1 probably should of been whatever comes next issue in #6 with a new story with the Turtles together. I really don't know why they made 5 separate one-shots when this could have just been in a mini-series, it's a weird way to kick off a fresh start.

The new characters backstory is pretty lame (he was ignored in school....lol? ) so there's not much to say. Casey is probably wearing body armor or whatever in the last panel, and Karai is likely possessed or being influenced.

Honestly the jury is still out whether the new reboot or Jason Aaron's writing is worth it. So far the writing seems a bit better than Sophie's run but there's really no way to tell if it'll actually be good or not till the next couple of issues come out. There's like nothing much to say so far.

Spoiler:
Unpopular opinion, I hope Casey will die this time. At least there would be some dramatic effect.

Well, issues 6-12? will be the true litmus test of Aaron's run. Campbell's first 5 issues were okay as well, and it wasn't until we got a bit into the next arc that we started seeing the starts of what would be many, MANY cracks.

This first story is just a teaser. Once Aaron has to do a run with everyone present, then we'll start to get an idea of where it's all going to go.

The Foot/boot combo insignia is a nice touch.

But the comics cover different times is getting a bit wonky between the main book (now-ish), Mutant Nation (six months ago?), Nightwatcher (a month ago?) and the Untold Destiny of the Foot Clan (I don't even know when). I got used to most of the tie-ins all being mostly chronological.

For Mutant Nation and Nightwatcher it's just the first 4/5 issues of each that are in the time skip.

Untold Destiny being confirmed to be included in the Volume 18 hardback would indicate that it takes during the 140s as Shargor suggested in the timeline thread.

It's weird they keep circling what to do with Karai. She keeps trying to build allies as seen in the Armaggeddon game, has like 3+ secret origins to the Foot Clan, had that magic sword for awhile, then got magic/dragon powers, etc. All that and we don't know why she hates the Turtles again despite having a truce at the end of #100 and after Rahzar/Tokka crippled her in the hospital.

I know she's likely being possessed/influenced by whatever that dragon god is inside her, but it's like they keep "building things up" with Karai that never seem to actually lead anywhere. How many times is Karai going to be set-up for something only to lead to another 3 mini-series...

yeah. so far the new series has been ok at best. hopefully they will rev up the engines as the series goes on. and really, quit flip flopping with karai. its all being thickle with her and its annoying. and couldn't care less about the corrupt mayor villain cliche. but there u go.

Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in!

Not really lol, but I did pick up #5 and #1 of the new volume while I was out Christmas shopping yesterday. I’ve been on a manic TMNT kick lately can couldn’t resist. First IDW comic I’ve bought in almost 5 years, except a few issues of Saturday Morning Adventures.

I’ll give this a shot for as long as I can. Definitely plenty of “boohoo Mutant Town” and “actually MAGA bad” overtones carrying over from the dark days.

How much am I missing by skipping Mutant Nation, Alpha, Nightwatcher and Desinty of the Foot?

I'm gonna expect at least some of the latter, considering you-know-who is back in action next month. The temptation to virtue signal is going to run rampant in those IDW offices.

No I don’t know who! I just read the solicit for #6 and it just says Jason Aaron and the new artist?

CyberCubed 12-22-2024 11:13 AM

Tom Waltz is writing the Mutant Nation mini-series.

Yes, a mid-level local political figure give an japan crime syndicate ability to attack civilians. Considering Foot's overly blatant behavior in Japan, India and the US in issues 1-5. This has actually become an international incident and the army will be called in. This isn't even something that can be solved with a bribe. Does Karai really want to bring "order"?
