Potentially controversial opinions about April

April being revealed as a magic drawing brought to life or a psychic human-utrom hybrid might be really strange and off-putting to most people...

Spoiler:
... But it's still better than making her a reporter.

IndigoErth 04-10-2025 08:40 PM

lol I mean... I do kinda like that the reporter angle does at least gives her reason to be a bit too foolishly daring sometimes, because she's just that driven to get a good story.

I misread the thread title as 'politically controversial opinions about April"

April sucks, for the most part. And while my instinct is to say “reporter April is bad”, I think my two favorite versions of her have to be Archie and 1990, so it’s not a dealbreaker.

Yeah, it helps as a way to make her more relevant to the plot. They barely played around with this in 2012, but in season 1 she was doing some investigative work while looking for her dad. Didn’t really go anywhere though.

I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ve always thought April as a NYPD cop or even detective would work well. You can still keep the antique store, a connection to Baxter, etc.

She and Casey would become very interesting foils. Most cops practice Jiu-jitsu, so it would be more believable if she ever ended up training with the guys.

The whole point of classic/Mirage April is that she’s just a normal person mixed up in the strangeness. I think this is a good compromise from the other end of the spectrum (“we need a girl character to be involved occasionally. **** it, make her Lois Lane”). And it’s certainly a more noble purpose than “I HAVE to get my story!”

Hey, that apartment building doesn't pay itself. Plus you don't want her to fall behind on her Sony payments again.

Being a reporter makes some degree of sense given how and why she stumbles across the Turtles. The only other thing that would serve that interaction would be if she were some kind of New York investigator - like safety and sanitation - not necessarily a cop.

Remember that historically most of the NY population who interact with the Turtles just look at them, blink and say "oookay". It's only a select few who tend to dive in deeper in the interactions.

My controversial April O'Neil opinion.

I say 80's April had a nice ass in that yellow jumpsuit and I'm tired of pretending she doesn't.

Haha, that joke actually made my laugh out loud when I was at the theater last month. It had never occurred toe that she was actually making a racist joke with the Sony thing because they were ninjas/had accents.

Or maybe I’m just crazy.

Y’know, I never understood the rampant horniness for FW April. Must be generational. I’m a little younger and grew up being in love with Misty.

Might be a coincidence but I saw it like 'damn, Sony doesn't **** around when it comes to collecting payments!

I can't speak for others but for me April came along just when kid me was starting to find women attractive. I mean, she was cute, pleasant voice, loved her 'gotta get that story' personality, had a nice set of T&A in a slightly tight outfit that shows it off, and she just so happened to be in my all-time favorite cartoon at the time in almost every episode. Like Charlie from Biker Mice was hot too but I never got into that show, so I don't have that 'rampant horniness' for her, like I have for April.

It's like Teela, She-Ra and Cheetarah appeared 1-2 years too early for me. I mean I wouldn't have considered them ugly, I still thought they were cute and all, but I was too young to have 'those' kinds of thoughts towards them yet.

My controversial opinion about April is that she is less attractive than Irma.

TheUltimateBum 04-11-2025 02:29 PM

I must admit, I never was a fan of the yellow jumpsuit April. I honestly preferred how she looked in the Red Sky seasons with the jacket and jeans.

She could have been better. Her character was limited, where her character development started, and ended with finding a bf/husband. It's an -ism, you know?

The ridiculous part is that the show *has* 2 female characters and managed for both of them to succeed in... not passing the Betchel Test*. *smile+sweating*
*3rd point: Talking anything else other than a man.
(Just in the pizzamonsers episode, it was a little boring episode tbh, working outside arcs.)

Though maybe sometimes people talking about romance force the same romance-narrative on other people, she didn't, she be nice.

Sorry, I got sidetracked.

Also, I tried to deepen her character by adding shy-scared trait theory or even androphobia (fear of men: The dating period could be intimidating and whatever kind of people you will meet and for whatever likes and preferences they have and going on in their mind). Some fear mixed with bravery. And I watch her thinking if my HC description can match her character.
April is a spunky one, a masculine trait she has, a bit of fearless, and maybe that's how/why she blends in better with action-boys in a male dominated show. Because she's the only one of the women who's close and frequently in touch. That's my theory.

Mad Dog McMutt 04-11-2025 04:27 PM

I don't understand it myself. Even when I was a kid, I preferred Irma. April actually has a good personality, but I like the way Irma looks.

Cartoons were watched by the kids. You shouldn't expect schoolgirls better as hot supermodels. I know it's a boy show, but they really didn't need such expectations on girls to gain status from boy pov or smth. If you listen to any superstars, those hot superstars were bashed and teased "unattractive" girls before. :(

IDW April is in an awkward position in the story. When she was Mayor Baxter Stockman's assistant, she had no influence on Stockman's actions. Now, Jason Aaron plan to turns her into Casey Jones, but this may just be a short-term hype.

Hey you’re on to something. This could explain the full body yellow hazmat suit.

I’m pretty sure I got the police idea from the fact that the original Playmates ‘88 figure inexplicably came with a sidearm lol.
