Man, between Justice League Infinity and THIS, J.M. DeMatteis has been a powerful force for comic cartoon revivals. (It probably helps that he contributed to both shows.)

ZariusTwo 06-19-2025 10:21 AM

Besides Morlun, the other new character appearing here that's never before seen in Spider-Man: TAS is...Kaine

This makes sense to follow up on, seeing as Warren did end up with Peter's DNA after MJ's clone died

CyberCubed 06-19-2025 02:05 PM

But when the shows come out do they acknowledge the comic continuations as canon? Did X-men '97 acknowledge the X-men comic cartoon revival stories at all? Or did they ignore them?

You already know the answer to these questions. Also 90s X-Men has had like 3 different comic continuations over the years.

Stuff like this is why I never consider side-media as canon.

In retrospect, I feel really bad for the MJ clone, I know I supposed to but I think it was even sadder than it was likely intended to be. Part of me wishes that had gotten Warren to fix it, maybe she could have gone on to be a good counterpart to Hydro-Man...

nidza_maj2000 06-19-2025 04:34 PM

So I am sure if this comic does well (it most likely will) we will get ongoing comic series

ZariusTwo 06-28-2025 01:02 AM

Ooof, the art looks a bit shaky with Peter

When they do stuff like this they really need to mimic the actual animated art style for years. It amazes me that the only book I've seen do this was the early issues of the new TMNT animated book.

I agree. That's what kinda gets me about books like the Dreamwave 2003 TMNT comic and The Batman comics. Way too stylized. It clashes worse when the comics themselves advertise the cartoons with on-model art of the characters.

nidza_maj2000 06-28-2025 01:25 PM

Maybe it can be explained that Peter face change is because some physical changes is happening to him and if this comic series becomes ongoing they should return to how he looked in animated series and say he looked like this in this 4 issues is because he went though some physical changes, what do you guys think about this?

Interview with JMD, preview pages, and solicit for Issue 3

https://www.cbr.com/jm-dematteis-int...hqMbzZZp_Zpy3A

Series isn't even going to resolve how Peter found MJ, it all takes place immediately afterwards. They say they'll resolve it some other time in the editorial notes. MJ proposes to Peter, but he's hesitant to answer, bringing up that he married her clone

Also,
Spoiler:
Morlun is Kane's father!

ZariusTwo 09-03-2025 02:46 AM

Ok, read the full thing now. The art actually does get better, the story is a bit all over the place, but in a fun way.

Spoiler:
Ezekiel Simms is an A.I hologram generated by Morlun, he is addressing people in a conference call when he is shortened out by Morlun awakening. Morlon contacts Kaine and tells him to find Peter. Peter and MJ touch down in New York after a spot of web swinging, MJ proposes marriage to Peter after they kiss but Peter is hesitant, they're already married but he's afraid he might lose her again. MJ is annoyed and storms off, Peter is being observed by Kaine.

Kaine returns to his 'father' Morlun where he frees him from his cocoon of webbing. Vermin randomly appears but Morlon kills him and feasts on his energies. Morlun rambles on about spider-totems and Peter's importance.

Mary Jane returns to Peter, storming into his bedroom, ripping the bedsheets off of him and demanding answers. Peter admits he's fearful of the future, but MJ tells him they can make their way through it all. She proposes a second time and Peter says 'yes'.

Spidey battles Mark Raxton, aka the Molten Man, very strategic feat here. Peter and MJ arrange a dinner with their Aunts. Aunt Anna seems to have put on a few pounds. She still hates Peter just like in the cartoon. Peter says the marriage still feels 'brand new' to him (hur hur). Peter's looking into getting into teaching.

Suddenly, Kaine attacks. He and Peter clash outside, Peter holds his own against Kaine for a bit, but ultimately Kaine gets the upper hand and nearly defeats Peter, but is defeated when he senses just how strong Peter's love for MJ actually is. He flees, returning to Morlun, but Morlun turns on Kaine and destroys him, feeding off his energy also. Morlun then enters a lab containing cloning pods and begins growing another Kaine

So I will read it later today so I did not read what you wrote in spoilers but maybe this Morlun is connected to other Spider-Man universes

nidza_maj2000 09-03-2025 06:03 AM

So I read it
Spoiler:
so it looks like this is same Morlun that appeared in other universes in comics because he keeps refering to Peter as Spider-Totem

The writer has said Morlun isn't the same as the other one, and has a different origin
