TMNT x Godzilla (Playmates Toys)

Since I'm prone to high-jacking the Comics Discussion thread about the TMNT x Godzilla crossover, I'll start a new one here just for the toyline, which sounds like will be hitting Target stores in October.

Convenient for Playmates to hold both licenses, but I'm surprised they went for an amalgamation theme. The mashups in Wave 1 will be Leo/Godzilla, Raphael/Rodan, and Michelangleo/King Ghidorah. That last one really throws me for a loop. Feels like a bit of a waste of Ghidorah's three-headed design and boss villain status to burn out on Mikey. Maybe they should have saved Ghidorah for Shredder, Rocksteady, & Bebop? Or maybe a multi-headed Krang?

The official Godzilla website has the details and it really surprised me that Playmates is based some of the styling of this line on a combination of 1987 TMNT and the 1978 Godzilla cartoon from Hanna-Barbera, of all things!

Mutants and monsters mash up in this epic TMNT x Godzilla cross-over, combining elements from the classic 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series with the nostalgic styling of the 1978 Godzilla animated TV series. It’s time to shell-ebrate some unique Cowabunga Kaiju, dudes!
I haven't seen all of the HB Godzilla cartoon, but it tended to introduce new monsters instead of adapting the Toho catalog.

These remind me a lot of the Dino Turtles.

For Realz!

By my count this will be the 2nd time that a licensed Turtles project will throw some love to the Hanna-Barbera Godzilla. The first being a very obscure mini-book exclusive to Spain: "Pizza de Dinosaurio" in Kiosk's Tortugas Ninja "Un Muneco Cuento" series:

Oh, I've seen all of the HB Godzilla cartoon, there's no Togo Kaiju outside of the Big G. They're all generic giant monsters he fights. The only thing I can think of that is iconic they could adapt is Godzuki.
It does feel odd they used Ghidorah and not for Shredder. Like who do they plan to do for Wave 2? Raph, Shredder & Splinter ? Don't you have to license each individual Kaiju from Tho? So doubt we'll see Mothra she seems to be the most expensive one, Mecha Godzilla for Shredder?

Yeah, that Mothra-tier licensing might be tricky, especially if Playmates amalgamates her with a female figure like April or Mona Lisa (is it still conventional thinking female figures don't sell as well as others in "Boys Toy Lines?"). Then again, we already have a template for Mothra-Irma!

This is why I must have them.

Dan Schoening is responsible for these concept designs!

Leo/Godzilla:

It’s Leo/Godzilla! I had an awesome time helping Playmates and their talented team of artists to develop the look for the new TMNTXGodzilla Toyline! Merging the aesthetics of the 1987 TMNT cartoon with the Hanna Barbera 1978 Godzilla cartoon was a certainly an atomic blast. The team at Playmates did an amazing job taking the drawings and creating some beautiful toys.

Mikey, as both Ghidorah AND King Caesar

Get your offerings of pizza out, it’s Michelangelo/Ghidorha! I had an awesome time helping Playmates and their talented team of artists to develop the look for the new TMNTXGodzilla Toyline! Taking inspiration from the 1987 TMNT cartoon and the 1978 Hanna Barbera animated show, we conjured up some visually interesting designs. For fun, I also pitched Mikey as King Caesar, but Ghidorha was all too powerful!

Raphael/Rodan:

Raphael/Rodan is still cool but rude, however now he’s added some real firepower! Here are the sketches and some roughs for the new toy design from Playmates. Combining the look and feel of the 1987 TMNT cartoon with the Hanna Barbera 1978 Godzilla cartoon was an inspired idea and the final toy looks awesome. The team at Playmates did an amazing job taking the drawings and creating some fun and visually beautiful toys.

Ngl, these look wicked sick

BlueKatana 10-06-2025 07:56 PM

These are hitting Targets now! I came across(and purchased) a sole Leo-Godzilla over the weekend!

Pippo 10-06-2025 08:24 PM

Found all three at my Target as well, but I could really only convince myself to buy one for now. Picked up Leo.

I'm hoping they aren't to hard to find by next paycheck, but I've always been betrayed. The display only had a couple left.

BlueKatana 11-01-2025 10:17 PM

Just a heads up, these are starting to get restocked again if you missed out a month back.

I wish people wouldn't use Imgur for some posts as I can't see them because it's been banned in the UK - apparrently you can get around the ban by using a VPN so I guess I should look into getting a free one.

Imgur is free, it’s the over-restrictive UK gov that’s the problem!
Got a better alternative for cheap casual image uploads?

ToTheNines 11-10-2025 06:25 PM

Sorry bruv.

Anyway, this line is very fun and I enjoy the mashup aspect even if it has nothing to do with the comic story. Conversely, I absolutely hated this style of crossover toy line when they did it for Ghostbusters. Such a waste.

How hard would it have been to do each turtle with a proton pack and do 4 individual ghostbusters loosely based on Dan Schoening’s art?

I was talking about a free VPN - on the image site front, I used to use Photobucket until they stopped the free account (or some other reason I had to stop using it).

Are you telling me you didn’t enjoy Raphael’s manly Winston mustache and Michelangelo’s cocky Peter eyebrows?

Ugly little spuds

Donnie, Splinter and Shredder are wave 2: https://toynewsi.com/216-61867

Probably just getting Don/Jet Jaguar and calling it quits on this line.

Powder 02-15-2026 01:34 AM

I'm obsessed with both properties but I'm not into crossovers. I think Dan did a very fun job with the designs, though. I just wish these & all other Playmates collab figures from the last decade had been done in the classic 4" 5POA Playmates style of yesteryear. Releases like the Ghostbuster & WWE icon turtles don't scaled too well with other lines, & for all their articulation, they're still produced very cheaply & have that kids toy feel. May as well just have honed in full on the nostalgia & engineered the figures themselves to appear retro, IMO. When it came to the classic line, I'd buy stuff even if I wasn't into it (like Star Trek turtles) purely just on the stylization of the sculpts.
