Joe? Joe is in this movie? One of the four Street Fighter 1 characters to never come back for any other game is in this movie?
|
I don't know at this point if this or Mortal Kombat can ever be anything but a B-grade flick with a C-Grade cast.
|
When they first started announcing the SF cast I was like, "Oh wow... they've really got something going here." But then as some of the other names started coming out later on it became pretty clear that this is basically just a big joke.

I remember being very excited for The Legend of Chun Li since the original movie had been such a laughing stock on the internet for years, surely they were going to understand how to make a correct live action movie. It was so bad. I can actually enjoy the original movie, it's silly but fun.
I just don't see how they can do a good SF movie unless it's some indie stuff like that legend of akuma official fanfilm that came out a while ago. I don't think the casting is too off though, I could buy most of those as their characters. |

OK... OK, not bad. I wasn't feeling 50 Cent at all (at least, now, in 2025 with how he looks) when announced, but it looks like they're trying here. |
The actor playing Dan Hibiki revealed the wigs for Rhodes’ Guile and Momoa’s Blanka on his IG Stories.

If it takes place in 1993 rather than 1991, will Zangief dance Kalinka with a fictionalized Boris Yeltsin instead? :)

Sneak Peak of Street Fighter, It was shown during The Game Awards today.
|
i noticed El Fuerte got a cameo near the end. The kickboxer guy might be Adon?
|
Oh it's gonna be baaaadddd....
They also really need to find a way to cast these guys. Make Ryu believable and jacked. That looked like.... bad fanfilm material. |
Yeah... the costumes and whatnot look bad.
I think they're going full 'THIS IS BASED ON A VIDEO GAME, YOU GUYS' with this one. Ugh... the first one tried to take itself too seriously and ended up being camp. This is one is purposely leaning into the cheese. |
I think it's become very clear that peak Street Fighter on film was the SFII Animated Movie of the 90's. They are never going to surpass that.
Although that's a pretty high bar given that they are casting skinny weirdos with no real muscle tone as Ken and Ryu over and over. And Bison is supposed to be an absolutely jacked fighter with a tapered body - intimidating before he even reveals that he has psionic powers. And they put the crazy guy from The Dark Knight in that role? They put the living Polka Dot in that role? They put the soft spoken scientist from Blade Runner who gets broken internally from one hit in that role? |
Miiiiight end up being fun but yeesh... idk...

I'm mostly impressed they made the Vega guy look OK on film. There is literally no reason you would cast that guy if appearance or voice or anything was a factor. Hopefully the mask stays on for the whole movie. Even as a kid I got it... he's a super vain, cocky Spaniard with a cool Jason mask and Freddy glove. Also, possibly gay (I mean, we were kids... we would talk, but I genuinely think Capcom was going for that). But fun to play as if you were good with him.
But as someone with an eye for such things because I do such things... this does seem like a slightly elevated fan film who got a little backing. Backing enough to get backing for bigtime wirework. They're basically selling "we have a budget enough to do a ton of wirework here!" As in, people getting yanked around from hits with practical effects and not CGI. But a lot of very obvious cheap gel lighting. I do a lot of cheap gel lighting. We smell our own. |
The characters look more like cosplayers than I would've thought, but it seems they're not going for a realistic take on Street Fighter. I think they're going for a very stylized over substance. In fact I am going to guess storywise won't be much deeper than SFII The Animated movie, just something that's there for people to understand there's a bad guy but they won't go their way to explain lore or anything, just cool set pieces.
I think it can succeed if they go that route, if they go say the Mortal Kombat reboot route trying to actually tell a story and fail then it'll bomb. But let's not forget we're living in the Video Game Hollywood era now that superhero movies are dead, next year we're getting Mario, Silent Hill (2), Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat 2, we just got FNAF2, then the year after we're getting Zelda, Sonic 4 among others i'm forgetting. Writers finally know how to make a decent to great video game movie. |
