Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Finally, an actual new Castlevania game.

Eh....sort of? I watched the trailer there and thought "Oh, they're bringing Sonia Belmont back from non-canon in the original timeline. Or making a new timeline with her." But then... eh... that's supposed to be Trevor?? So it's a Castlevania 3 remake?

Not a fan of the art direction at all, it reminds me more of the countless derivative "Metroidvania" indie titles of the last decade than an actual Castlevania entry. Still, looks like it could be fun, feels like there's a little Hollow Knight influence in the platforming. Will wait for the Metacritic reviews.

My wife got excited for a new 2D Castlevania (its probably her favorite game franchise...until Lords of Shadow.) We haven't watched the trailer yet, but the potential for Sony exclusivity gives us pause.

Looks to be on all platforms, they showed everybody's console logo at the end of the trailer I watched.

It's not a remake of Castlevania 3, it's a sequel, it even says as much on the Steam page. You know, like how Symphony of the Night follows the (human) characters from Rondo of Blood, or how Dawn of Sorrow has the same cast of characters as Aria of Sorrow?

I am very excited about this. I absolutely love the Castlevania Metroidvania style games including Bloodstained.

What a horrible night to have a curse!

I'm not sure how. In the story there is Castlevania 3 with Trevor and then Curse of Darkness with Hector and all (that they RUINED in the Netflix show) with no adventures or additional Dracula resurrections in between. Until Simon.

The best thing that's happened to Castlevania in God knows how long was Lords of Shadow. They really hit the bullseye with that one in every way - and graphically it was incredible at the time. Then Lords of Shadow 2 came out and killed the franchise reboot completely.

And "Lament of Innocence" is probably the most underrated Castlevania game of all time.

I tried that for a while on the PS3 cloud-play I have on PS5 but the polygons seemed pretty jagged and probably the streaming effect didn't help either, but I intend to do what I've been doing with a lot of PS2 and PS3 emulation lately and run it on an emulator from my laptop to my TV with the PS5 controller, boosting the settings into 4K. I bet Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness will look great on that, too.

Was that really bad?

In fact, here's what that looks like:

Lament of Innocence in 4K:

Curse of Darkness in 4K:

Lords of Shadow in 4K:

Wow, Lords of Shadow looks GREAT upscaled like that. Looks like a damn PS5 game just about.

So it IS Sonia Belmont. Albeit, a retconned one (now she is Trevor's daughter with Sypha and not his mother).

So now... "Rose" Belmont, I guess.

Not the same? She doesn't exist in that (horrible) series. But she'd be the daughter of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades.

Looks like elements from Curse of Darkness may appear in it. And... Joan of Arc? Huh?

I am so glad that this game is getting a Switch 1 release. I love playing Castlevania Metroidvania games. Hopefully the upcoming Bloodstained game will also get a Switch 1 release.
