Which year sounds more "recent" to you, 2005 or 2015?
It just occurred to me 2005 is now over 20 years ago while 2015 is over 10 years ago. Yet for some reason to me, 2005 feels like "only yesterday" to me while 2015 just feels like some distant year in the future.
What do you guys think? |
tbh anything pre pandemic feels like a lifetime ago. My life has changed so much since either of those decades.
2005 I was still in High School, 2015 I was first investing in bitcoin, |
Neither feel all that long ago to me, oddly.

Well, since I passed first grade mathematics, I know damn well that 26-15=11 and that 26-5=21 which in turn means the difference between 26 and 5 is greater than the one between 26 and 15. Inherently, something that was 11 years ago must be more recent than something that was 21 years ago.
If that's too complicated to wrap your head around, when measuring in years, the bigger number means more years pass, 21 is a bigger number than 11. |
When I visit these forums, everything seems to be back in 2003.

In late June 2005 we had Volume 4 #22 (the infamous April is a drawing issue) and Tales #12 (Paris Nocturne) on shelves. Exodus had aired two months ago and we were waiting on season 4 to drop.
Late June 2015, Renet and Savanti debuted in “Turtles in Time” and IDW #47 was on shelves. Donatello was still “dead”, with his mind trapped inside Metalhead. Also the IDW Mutanimals miniseries had just wrapped up and New Animated Adventures had dropped its final issue (#24). Its successor Amazing Adventures was only two months from beginning with a new #1. Quote:

It was 6 years ago but COVID seems like yesterday, but in a strange hazey way. 2015 doesn't seem that long ago. Like, I can remember what I was doing in big parts of that year. Around 2009 doesn't FEEL like that long ago but that's around where it starts to become a little bit less recognizable than today. 2001-2005 or so were not particularly great years for me so they do feel like "the long ago" at this point.

To me, 2010-2015 feel like a complete blur. Like I do not remember anything from the early 2010's. From 2015 onward it just feels like the last 10 years have been mostly the same. That's why people often say they're surprised the early 2000's are now 20 years ago, because it really does not feel like it. Most of us grew up since then, finished school, got full-time jobs, etc, but to me it doesn't feel that long ago.
Then again I have no kids, so for those of you with families it's probably different. I do imagine having a kid changes things. |

I'm still blown away that 2015 is a decade old, same with 2016, I keep going into threads from those periods and being amazed that some of the members I knew frequented even as back as that, even many mods, who all stopped posting around during or just after COVID...some hung on long enough to see Trump sworn in twice before ceasing. 2005 still is fresh in my mind. Had a good time but didn't get up to much either, other than dicking around online, being a troll and a general pain in the neck. |
I think it might also be because the early 2000's had so much changes in technology almost rapidly, we were still on VHS tapes in the beginning of the 2000's! Then DVD's become mainstream, then blu-ray, then the start of online streaming.
Old flip-top cell phones were still the norm, the first i-phone didn't even come out till 2007! It's actually hard to believe how the modern smart phone didn't even come out till near the end of the early 2000's, and most people didn't even get an i-phone at first. I remember the whole idea of a touch screen cell phone sounded so unrealistic at first. Can you believe youtube also didn't even come out till 2005? Youtube is such a mainstream part of the internet, for even official companies like movie trailers and videogame trailers, that it's hard to believe it did not even exist till 2005. I remember watching videos/trailers for games and movies on quicktime and Realplayer on websites back then. People claim the early 2000's weren't much different than now but they were VERY different. 2000-2009 especially feel like a different world from now. Then from 2010 onward we pretty much started the whole streamong/online internet/social stuff, then the gay and transgender crowd claimed their identities proudly for the first time, and then it went on from there. |

That's what I thought, if I was born like a decade later instead of being a forum dweller all my rants and posts would have been on youtube instead. It's probably for the best I was born before youtube was a thing, I would have been "canceled" several times over if I made videos based on the stuff I've said over the last 20 years.

2015 because… uh, math?
