Are the Turtles, "persons of color?"

There was a discussion in the Mutant Mayhem thread recently whether the Turtles are "black coded" as you can read on this page:

https://forums.thetechnodrome.com/sh...43#post2032443

So that got me thinking, are the Turtles considered, "persons of color" given they have green skin? There was one episode of the original cartoon where either Rocksteady or Bebop said, "It's the green guys over there!" or something along those lines.

One of the catch phrases in the original cartoon is, "Go Green Machine!" which is basically equal to saying, "Black Power" as a saying. Bebop/Rocksteady also call the Turtles, "shellbacks" as an insult, which is based on a slur I won't repeat in real life.

There was one episode of the original cartoon Michelangelo turned into a white human kid, so it seems the Fred Wolf writers saw the Turtles as white. But then in later iterations we have 2012 Mikey also using a lot of slang like, "Dawg" and "Homies" and "Wassup y'all?" despite Greg Cipes (the voice actor) also being white in real life.

Back in 2007 Tothenines also made a thread because his friends thought Donatello was black:

It's probably because in the Playmates toyline Don's skin is a darker green and some of the Playmates variants had Don in a basketball outfit and a punk rock rapper outfit. Either way they all still have green skin.

How do you see the Turtles? They have green skin but they usually "act white" in most incarnations. Discuss and debate amongst yourselves.

... Well, in IDW they're reincarnations of Japanese kids, does that count? Otherwise they're literally just mutated turtles.

I prefer seing them as green.

No more than you are I are dogs if we were a dog in some past life.

Leo is Japanese, Don is Jewish, Raph is Italian and Mike is Lantinx.

That statement was a joke.

The master cheese maker?

ToTheNines 09-07-2026 06:55 PM

Haha, yeah. Doesn’t Raph hate magic?

Reminds me of that Robot Chicken sketch where they argued whether they were Italian or Japanese. The conclusion was they're "f-ing Turtles."

Green skin is technically a person of color. It's weird we don't think of green skin since real life Turtles are green but then the Hulk is also green and people see him as a "green guy."

The TMNT were actually originally grey, but this color was changed to green because the 1960s printing technology could not reproduce grey ink consistently for the covers and it's all this indie studio Mirage could afford in the 80s. The creators of TMNT have gone on record various times about htis. It's also why they appear black white grayish in Turtles forever, they're real intended color. People are just familiarized with the 1980s Cartoon where they colorized everything.

Why does The Incredible Hulk come to mind?

CyberCubed 09-10-2026 08:27 PM

Is The Hulk considered a person of color?

Coola Yagami 09-10-2026 10:34 PM

Worrying about the 'race' of the Turtles as if they were humans is the very definition of 'white people problems'.

As a white boy I need to know if I can relate to the Turtles! I hear a lot of TV writers/movie execs feel persons of color need other persons of color in TV shows and movies to relate to! That's how you get di-ver-sity in TV/movies now! A racial diverse cast instead of all whites like the 90's!

I can only relate to straight white males!

You are so real for that, CyberCubed.

ToTheNines 09-11-2026 07:46 AM

Anyone that actually knows their cybercubed lore knows he is POC, queer-coded, and neurodivergent.
