Volume Four Bashers: Say what you LIKED about Volume 4

I'm not letting the MIRAGE Volume Four bashers off the hook either, swallow your pride and confess what you liked about Voulme Four, it can either be one issue you liked, or a story arc

Taloniss 03-31-2004 12:12 PM

I like how it's all one continous story. Sure it makes it hard for newcomers to jump in, but it makes it seem like the Mirage Universe is larger since everyone has their own thing, and it can mean more page time each month overall for characters who sometimes would get very little if they did each story as a seperate arc. IE, if they did the Don investigating the jungle arc, the rest of the Turtles might get very little page time, ditto for April/Casey.

Something I Liked....

Hmmm.....

I liked how Laird printed a comment I made about the art looking like a 10 year old drew it.
And bashing me over my opinion. Gives warm feelings in my heart. :)

Peanut 03-31-2004 01:28 PM

Hey Splint let's not get into that again.

What? I'm being honest. I did like it. It shows that Laird and his group do read the forums and take notice of what people are saying about the book. Both good and bad. Even if Laird is not accepting of negative opinions. So while I may not like Volume 4, I like that Laird does keep his finger on the pulse of the fans. He's already said he's doing the book that he wants to do, and doesn't care what anyone else wants. I may not like him or the book, but I respect his right to do whatever he wants with the property. :)

Well, I can give you the next best thing. My original post, from the comic discussion on TMNT Volume 4 Issue #10:
Quote:

True, the art is pretty horrible. And proffessional artists I have shown it to say it looks like it was done by a 10 year old. But still, the point of the thread is talking about the death of a beloved character. Not how terrible the art is. That's a subject for another thread.
Laird's comments in Issue #11:
Quote:

I've given a lot of thought to the criticisms of his artwork hat have been posted on the various web forums, and hve come to the conclusion that most of his most vocal critics really don't know what they're talking about. Obviously, they're entitled to their opinions, but really - when somebody says (and I'm paraphrasing here) "I showed Lawson's art to an artist and he said it looked like a ten year old drew it", how can you take it seriously?
There ya go. Just check the letters column in Issue #11. As for how seriously he can take it. I'm willing to praise good comic artists. Just as much as I'm willing to say what I don't like. And since I read quite a few comics ever month, I would think I have some serious tastes in comic art. :)

Roseangelo 03-31-2004 05:50 PM

Ah, so that's where that came from.. I figured it was from somewhere on these boards. It seems everytime Peter gets particularly defensive over something it's been a recent topic here.

ZariusTwo 03-31-2004 07:03 PM

Ahhhhhh, thanks for posting it up anyway Splinter, I have strong tastes in Comic art myself, I like the artwork in "Tales of the TMNT", volume Four I like not for the art, but for the story, the art is fine...in places.

Still it's ten times better than the crappy art used for "New X-Men"

Cry about it? I think it's funny. I'm not bashing Laird or Lawson. I'm commenting on their art and their book. Lawson used to be tons better in his art. Frankly I don't think he cares all that much anymore. And just dashes out quick work to pay the bills. And like I said, I don't like Laird's attitude of the current storyline. But I'm not against him running the book into the ground if he wants to. It's his choice. :)

Aztec General 03-31-2004 07:19 PM

 Oh goodie more discussion about Lawson's art.

On a more productive note:

I like Volume 4 a lot. I'm particularly interested in how, as of late, each issue is 5 seperate storylines. It's cool to follow them piece by piece. I also love how Laird has been building up to something HUGE for the past 15 issues. Each one reveals something a little more about what's going on.

I'm uncertain how I feel about Raph being a vampire, but I'll be very interested if it turns out to be a "bioweapon" like it was predicted in #15. i also wish that at least one of the storylines wasn't entirely science fiction.

Sorry for being a little harsh. thanks for not bashing me back i was expecting something harsh. But i do think you were bashing lawsens art. And i Quote " True, the art is pretty horrible. Im not in love with lawsens art myself. Its funny all his guys kinda look the same and they look like a kid at my school

but splinter didn't say that the artist she showed it to did.
and to be honest laird knows allot of us don't like lawsons art that much but to be honest with you all he's either being really lazzy with his recent efforts or it's the inker that inks his art at the moment because his art was not this bad sure it was cartoony but look at city at war and look at his art now it's not even close the art work he did for city at war was beautifuly drawn and flowed so nicely. I don't know what his deal is but his art isn't what it used to be now that I really think about it and look back.....but like I said it could just be a bad inker.

Roseangelo 03-31-2004 11:46 PM

I believe Eric Talbot has been inking recently. He has a very thick-lined, blotty style, which I happen to really like. When combined with strong pencils (I especially liked it when he inked some of the Archie books with Chris Allan's pencils). I don't think it works well with Jim's current art, which is much sloppier than what's he's capable of.

Kid Icarus 03-31-2004 11:53 PM

I really like how Laird is doing his own thing. I like most of the story lines. I like the non-human art, and the background look. And the covers... man, they're pretty :D.

I still don't like how the man takes criticism though.

See that was what I was thinking, not that it's necessarily bad but the art (which does seem a little lazier) and inking don't match. I think Lawson's work requires a lot more shading like in the City At War stuff

Still vol 4 is okay with me
