Peter Laird is a hypocrit.

I just saw Turtles in Space Part 1. Whilst in the sewers, the turtles and Honeycut briefly see four mutant space rats and one space mutant sensei turtle. I have nothing against these characters, but this bluntantly contradics Peter Laird's stricked rules not to use turtles other than Leo, Raph, Don and Mikey. This isn't the first time it's happened, in #7 of Volume 4 we see transdimensional turtles. I've spoken to Laird about this before, he clearly says the reason he dislikes Venus is because she stole the four turtles of what made them unique, and he simply wants to keep them unique. Well the contents of both the new show and the new comics are not the actions of a man who wishes to keep the green team four of a kind. Do you know what he referes to people who come up with new turtle characters? "less creative types" "people who are not really creative thinkers. But unfortunately, they THINK they are creative" Not to attack the man, but I'm rapidly becoming convinced the only reason Laird dislikes turtles other than the boys, such as Venus, is because he didn't come up with the idea himself, these 'less creative types' did.

Point 1. Other-dimensional turtles...do you mean other versions of the turtles we already know? I don't see how that counts

Point 2. Was the occurance in the episode also not another example of other-dimensional turtles?

Point 3. Were these character's permanent additions that were part of that dimension? Were they as significant as Venus?

Point 4. It's 'hypocrite'

Point 5. Give it a rest

It just type fast.

It's not just the use of other turtles, but the fact that Laird won't let the TMNT characters evolve, undergo changes, through time unless it suits him. Example, I find it strange that he has a problem with Donatello becoming a cyborg, yet he doesn't mind completely changing the character of Shredder for the new show.

raphael_is_cool 06-13-2004 05:21 PM

He never had a problem with the original toon either. They're not part of that incarnation, that's why I don't see the point there

As for allowing them to change...have you seen the latest vol 4 comics? Raph is all transformed (and Don has been shrunken :P )

he had to, or else Shredder woulda been dead since his first appearance.

The point I'm making is that Laird makes such a fuss over the use of turtles other than the boys yet doesn't have a problem with dreaming up his own. Used sparingly yes, but the fact is he used them and broke his own 'no more than four turtles' rule. It sounds like hypocricy to me. And the fact that he attacks these so-called uncreative thinkers with slander is not on when he doesn't go by his own rules.

I'm not trying to bash the guy, I'm just stating what I see.

Kiddo Cabbusses 06-13-2004 06:07 PM

You know, if you wanted to call Laird a Hypocrite, you could have at least had a better case other than an instance in the "Turtles in Space" arc...

DrSpengler 06-13-2004 06:40 PM

If you're gonna bash Laird just say something about his personality. The guy's an asshole.

And as far as the Cowabunga Rats are concerned they were just placed there for a little joke. They had no signifigance to the story what-so-ever. Just like April isn't going to turn into a reported just because she wore that yellow jumpsuit once and Krang isn't going to be trying to take over Earth with a Technodrome just because he made that brief cameo as an Utrom.

how so. he dosent strike me as one atall

Donatello 06-13-2004 07:03 PM

Laird isn't an asshole, people just like to challenge him.

first off, this whoole thread is a joke, the alter dimension turtles were just kind of a funny irony, not to make a big deal. the TMNT in space thing was a gag, calm down.

as for determination not to change the turtles, i like it, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. almost any comic franchise returns to how things were normally, silly changes are evenyually abandoned to get the original character back, so laird decides just not to change them. like wolverine being a Wearwolf, and professor x becoming onslaught, of Superman having no powers. all this stuff goes away to get back what originally worked.

and as for the show, althougfh laird is involved, he's not doing the whole show. i'm sure the shred thing wasn't his idea, but he okayed it because it's new and interesting, and it was executed well

oh and to the mods, how come we can't even slightly criticize the old show, but we can flat out bash the great peter laird

You got that right, the egocentric prick can't accept any ideas other than his own, or were they Eastman's ideas?

Does it really matter what Laird is like? He created something that all of us here love. Even if what you say is true, I still think he deserves our respect for what he has done. If you want to criticize him, it is your right, but please don't resort to foul language. Your point will come across better if you do it in a more mature manner.

Who cares...the funny alternate ninja rats were for the JOKE!

Ryona 06-13-2004 08:39 PM

I say, go with the flow and enjoy the ride. If anything, we're pretty damn lucky that the TMNT made a comeback. We're witnessing the second wave! :tparty: :thyper:

Exactly! I've waited some good long years for a comeback, after the Gigli version of the turtles (Next Mutation), I think this new show makes me want to cook Laird's dinner and clean his house for a year.

Sanjuro 06-13-2004 10:11 PM

Some of you people sound like the worst damn comic book nerds on earth. I guess if there were no TMNT you all would have nothing to complain about. Sigh..

1.Venus was poor, poor character who likeI said before at times can have the brain of a Harvard graduate or one of a mentally challeneged person.

2.Seeing 4 rats and a turtle in a alternate universe that has nothing to do with the TMNT origin or plot for that matter.

3.Yeah, I guess Peter Laird is an asshole. Thats why he gave all us fans somthing to be proud of again by creating a show that is the best adaptation of his creation and allowing us fans to live Turtle-mania all over again.

This is yet again more TMNT bashing. Luckily the middle show was called just "Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation". It lacks the Teenage Mutant part and it almost brought an end to the entire franchise. So I'd say its fair game.
