Hypothetically, TMNT set in Chicago

What would you think if there were a version of the Turtles that lived in Chicago instead of NYC?

It would probably make little or no difference story-wise, since neither in the Mirage comic nor the 1987 cartoon was there anything uniquely "New York" about anything in them (except for the brief use of the Twin Towers).

Does Chicago have subways and manhole covers?

It doesn't have to be New York. It could be Detroit, San Francisco, or any major US city

If done right, I can see it working.

I guess a better question would be, what cities do you think TMNT couldn't be set in?

Chernobyl in Ukraine. Actually, that would be pretty cool, with all the radiation it would have some fun mutants.

I just wanted to see what other fans would think about TMNT in a different city.

I think it would work fine.... Maybe you'd see more deep dish pizza but the story would work

I was born and raised in Chicago and was still living there when the TMNT first aired. It wouldn't have changed the series THAT much.... buuuuut it would have added that little extra bit of coolness for me knowing it was set in my home town. Imagine being a kid in the 80's and saying you live in Chicago like the Ninja Turtles.

I remember watching Family Matters and digging all the Bulls references as a kid.

As much as the response here is "Wouldn't make a difference", you can almost guarantee that if a new comic or movie suddenly decided to set TMNT in Detroit or anywhere else BUT New York, there'd be resistance. And I'm in that category, too.

My main question for setting TMNT in another city would be why? Because it'd feel just like another "just to be different" kind of thing producers like to do.

But if it served the story right? Sure, I'm sure we'd understand and go with it.

It's all about the context.

Then say tmnt in a different city not specifically Chicago. Are you from there or a Blackhawks fan or something? It really makes no difference at all. Unless they're on an Indian reservation or a specifically ethnic neighborhood. Like a place with only one race. The only other thing would be if they were in a place with religious radicals or something of that nature .

Standpoint Idaho. The nearest Target is an hour and a half away. It's the smallest city I've ever seen. They couldn't live in those sewers, or scale any buildings, as there aren't many to scale.

I'd imagine it'd look an awful lot like Nolan's Batman series, which had Chicago take stand in as "Gotham."

The visuals would be cool, they pretty much built the city on top of the previous city.

While it really doesn't make a difference, it does make a difference. It would be having a Batman movie or cartoon in which he is from New York. He's not from New York, he's from Gotham City. The TMNT aren't from Chicago, they're from New York.

Roswell, New Mexico but now that I said that out loud, I would seriously love to see an alternate universe fan fiction set over there. There would have to be some changes. Instead of the sewers, they would probably live in some abandoned farm with tunnels dug out by Splinter himself and they would deal with weird alien stuff which lead them discovering the mutatgen!

Oh I'm getting chills!
