I rewatched this movie yesterday and had the same question. I'm glad there was a thread already dedicated to this question. So it was just a flaw in the film? Or did I miss something...

Magic mutagen cure-all which he...already... um... had in his system. But for some reason needed more in order to live while his sons were drained of a lot of their own, but, nah, they're ok with that. Um.

He survived because he's freaking mutated, humanoid rat.

His biology likely works much differently than that of a normal rat, or even a human.
