Ben did say to seth that he was proud to be taking the Katana from him....but may just have been figure of speech.
I wonder if once everyone's seen the designs today we will want a wild speculations thread ☺ |

Yeah doesn't look like any kusari-fundo I've ever seen. Looks more like a stylized dai chui/meteor hammer. The fact that Leo's swords have never traditionally been katana speaks volumes of this.

April's design is rather forgettable, at least right now. Doesn't look distinct enough to be a lead female character design in a show. I'm not really concerned over it though.

But honestly just awful, If this was the first exposure to the turtles it would never have taken off. Gonna miss the 2012 versions all the more now.

2. April looks a little too much like Moon Girl. 3. What's with the spirit baseball bat? 4. How big is Raph now? 5. And straight up fangs? Geez, we already know he's the tough guy. 6. Why does he use tonfa? Are sai the new controversial ninja weapon? 7. Speaking of the old controversial ninja weapon, the hell is Mike using a flail instead of nunchucks? I thought the world no longer gave a crap about nunchuck violence. 8. Also, why did he paint smiley facese on his kneepads? 9. Does Donny have armor over his shell? Isn't that kind of pointless? 10. Doctor Eggman's goggle hat, I'm not sure why that's a thing that keeps creeping into his design. 11. While I'm on the subject of design elements I don't really like but keep popping up, what's with the scalp covering? This is the third version to depict a few turtles like that and I don't get it. I don't know why I think it looks ugly, I just do. Anyway, these are nitpicks. I like the actual art style and I suspect I'll either warm up to the designs eventually, or at least I won't have a problem living with it. I don't really have a problem with Leo's design and I guess most other characters will look fine as well. I just wanted to get the stuff that bugged me off my chest. I'm sure kids will be fine with these designs. |

Don't know if this maybe warrants its own thread, but one of my favourite artists, Corey Lewis posted this the other day, his take on the TMNT and what he proposed to Nick after being requested to come up with some concepts.
I'm guessing Nick asked several artists to provide concepts, so I'm hoping other artists might share their work also. Corey states: "In 2016 Nickelodeon asked for my take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They didn't use the concept I created, but I'm still proud of it! My version of TMNT is "Post-Footpocalyptic", meaning the Foot Clan has taken over, under the dictatorship of Grand Ruler Krang. Mutants are more commonplace in my TMNT world, so the Turtles themselves often go out into the streets. April O'Neil is a guerrilla reporter not afraid to take knocks to reveal the truth! Shredder takes the form of a more elemental evil. A mysterious dark cloud that emerges periodically, leaving a trail of cut-up debris in his path. Perhaps he's the spirit of a once defeated foe, bound for revenge... Splinter was formerly a movie buff, as well as a martial artist, giving him a flair for the theatrical. The Turtles followed his hobby, and all take after certain movie types that they rather enjoy. Some fun concepts for TMNT" Obviously these are just initial concepts, I'm sure if this had been picked they would have then been worked on further by the Nick team. I see something of his design https://www.behance.net/gallery/6144...aracter-Design in these RISE turtles, like Mikey kneepads, Leo Sword and Donnie Tech-Backpack

I like 'em!
Splinter looks like the most severe departure because he reminds me of "sensei" characters from other shows and movies. But it'll be fun to see how the show develops.

I have to say, Looking at the image in SD I really didn't like the designs all to much. But once I found an very big HD copy over at EW and could look a lot closer, I actually find myself really liking the designs.
Oh, and for everyone who doesn't like the fact that Raph is so big. I actually kinda think it makes sense. I mean this Raph is a snapping turtle just like Slash. And Slash is big. So it wouldn't make much sense if Raph was thin and small like the others and then in comes Slash all three times his side. Only way to make Raph smaller would basically be making him small for a Snapping Turtle. And really when you think of Raph you never think small. |

I’m more of a lurker and less of a poster from way back. But I stumbled across this article by accident the minute after it was posted. I was so disappointed I just had to share.
I think what’s bothering me is that it seems to be a reworking of the TMNT for “the kids” in a cash grabby kind of way. I wonder if it has something to do with playmates dwindleing toy sales since cartoons and toy sales are tied hand in hand. |

This just reeks of forgettable early-2000's to mid-2000's Saturday morning cartoons. Anyone remember "Loonatics Unleashed" when they tried to give funky designs and glowing energy to “hip” versions of the Looney Tunes?
![]() Splinter is, by far, one of the worst offenders ... he looks like a parody version of Splinter from an episode of "Ren & Stimpy." ![]() Okay fine ... they want to give the Turtles different looks by making them different species of Turtles, I can buy that ... but Raphael's size still bothers me. How in the hell is he supposed to be a ninja at that kind of size? It didn't make sense in the Bay Turtles and I doubt they'll put some logic into it here. Overall ... it's a big ol' pile of blah.

Weird that they would have EW show these images off hours before their FB event to reveal the same thing.

I'm thinking still action shots aren't going to be truly indicative of how this is going to look animated, especially if they're taking nods from Samurai Jack.
In which case I'm reserving final judgment until we get a trailer. Plus, spectacular voice acting can mask a multitude of sins. The one design I'm the most critical of at the moment is Splinter, which is strangely fitting given that his 2012 design was the one I liked the least as well. That the 2012 Splinter rapidly became my favorite incarnation of the character overall has me worrying a bit less about his new design. So long as he doesn't become the farting sumo guy from the 2007 cartoon. Then all bets are off.
