Comic based TMNT

Just read this at www.offthecard.com

Quote:
OTC reader jc sends along word of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle rumor that fans of the comics will be thrilled to hear. Jc reports that Playmates is set to announce sometime between now and Toy Fair 2004 the release of Turtles based on the Mirage comic series. He mentions:

'These would be a little more "blocky" (but not Kubrick blocky...just more geometric), and the Turtles themselves would feature their red bandanas, instead of the rainbow assortment from the cartoons.'

Keep in mind that this is a rumor until officially announced! Ninja Turtle fans - keep your fingers crossed.

Normally, I'd just write this off as yet another internet rumor... except I've read a few hints and rumors about this in the www.action-figure.com forums for awhile now, to the point where it seems pretty likely. Specifically, these threads:

http://www.action-figure.com/index.p...pic&t=4677

http://www.action-figure.com/index.p...ght=comic+tmnt

For now, I think this still sounds like a rumor, but then again you never know...

I would snatch those up in a heart beat! Probably two of each: one to keep carded, and one to open (which I rarely do)!

So, which would it be? Would they be done in Green, Red and brown, or all in shades of Black and White, to seem more like the comic? Either way, this is too much to hope for. Come on Playmates, surprise us!

I would shed a gentle tear. We would have 4 of the real TMNT, in their truest form. It gets no better than that.

I have actually been wishing they would do this for a long time. Come on Playmates!

and they would probably just be green since the bandanas are red.

I still have major doubts that it will really happen. Atleast at retail, since the all red masks would confuse kids. If anything, it would be a retailer or mirage/offical site exclusive.

Either way this would be a great thing especially for us long time tmnt fans. I still won't get my hopes up though.

I dunno... it COULD confuse kids, but we have a large market for adult and nostaglic collectibles (I.e. Muppet Show, Cereal Mascots, Pg-13- R movies, stuff like that).

I'd say these would fare well in Comic Book Stores and places with a large assortment of adlut/nostalgic collectibles. They may not make it in Target or WalMart.....

I really wonder if it's worth putting out another variant of the turtles.

It's not all that hard to paint their masks red ya know...

We're always going to have to deal with resculpts of the main characters, no matter what toy line you're looking at. At least stuff like this, and variations from the show, make the line less annoying.

Sounds to me like these will be brand new sculpts, too. Notice the report mentioned they would be more geometrically shaped?

Although I am not a fan of the comics, these figs could be cool.

It would be cool if playmates did these because that would mean they are listening to what the fans want.

Playmates definitely listens to what the fans want. Their other most successful line in recent years is The Simpsons, and for the last year or two Playmates has been releasing figures almost directly corresponding to the results of fan polls. At one point, they were even accepting 10 questions each month from the major collecting message board, that they would then answer.

Plus, they did inquire as to what people would like to see in a Baxter Stockman figure late last year in the www.action-figure.com forums, and I'm almost certain one of those earlier threads I posted was Playmates way of judging the demand for comic accurate TMNT.
