Here's a question...why in the original opening sequence for the cartoon does it show Splinter tranforming from a human into a rat when the movies explain that he was a rat to begin with? I did not read the comics, but is there something I missed?

This should be in the "General TMNT Discussion" area, but I'm sure someone can help you with that.

The original cartoon had a different story than the original comics. The movies were closer to the original comics than they were to the cartoon show. And the new show is closest to the original comics than any show, movie, or game yet.

They just chose to take the original cartoon in a completely different direction, that's all. In the old show Splinter was formerly Hamato Yoshi who trained with Oroku Saki (Shredder), but Oroku ruined Yoshi's reputation by setting him up it up to look like he was going to attempt to kill a high ranking person (don't know the man's name) and he was banished from Japan, ending up in the sewers of New York with the rats. He one day came across four baby turtles and began to take care of them. When one day he saw them in some ooze, they mutated into a turtle/human hybrid, he turned into a human/rat hybrid (though he probably should have turned into a turtle/human hybrid, too). And the rest is history.

While the movie version of Splinter had him being a former pet rat of Hamato Yoshi who had followed the moves that Yoshi did, learning the art of ninjitsu. Yoshi and Saki were both in love with a woman (who's name escapse me), but she only loved Yoshi. She convinced Yoshi to flee to America with her and he did, along with his pet rat. One day, Saki had shown up in Yoshi's home and had slain Yoshi's love. Then, Yoshi arrived and Saki killed him, too. Splinter swore revenge against Saki. Splinter fled his home and was forced to live in the sewers, where he came across the baby turtles, the ooze, and was mutated. The rest is history.

They were just going with a different direction in the old cartoon than the comics did. Probably so they could appeal to the kids more.

in the original comics yoshi and saki's brother nagi fought for Tang Shin (who was the objest of saki's and yoshi's affection in the first movie) Nagi psudo-raped Shen...at least ruffed her up a bit and yoshi killed Nagi in a rage. Then after he killed Nagi Yoshi took shen and fled to america. Saki was inraged and trained with the foot only to exact his revenge on yoshi. he became a master ninja and was sent to america to lead the american foot, a perfect place for him to get revenge on yoshi. then saki kills shen, yoshi finds her dead and is killed by saki, splinter escapes and lives in the sewers and the rest as they say is history...
