Showed the TMNT anime OVAs to my friends...

They did not go over well.

So a week ago, my friends went to see the new TMNT movie and decided to watch a whole bunch of old TMNT crap after we got home. I brought over my DVD of the two TMNT anime OVAs because my friends were real curious as to how bad they were.

Oh man, they couldn't stand them. I mean, they watched them both, but by the end they were just begging for the things to be over.

They thought they were funny at first, but as the OVAs went along they almost started to get mad (well, there was beer involved). We all came to the consensus after the first OVA that the Japanese should never again be allowed to touch Ninja Turtles fiction.

Their main complaint was "this isn't Ninja Turtles, this is just some generic anime". They especially hated the Super Mutant redesigns of the Turtles and truly loathed Kris Mu (though they thought Dark Mu was kinda funny, mostly because we referred to her as "the Bondage Fairy"). The whole sentai/Power Rangers elements also turned them off.

They did get a kick out of a few parts.

Krangs voice put them in stitches. They also all screamed a unanimous "WTF!!?!" when SPlinter caught Dark Devil Shredder's gigantic energy ball, Dragonball Z-style.

Overall, though, it was more enraging than entertaining.

Personally, I think the OVAs are...er..."interesting" footnotes in the TMNT's history. Not particularly good, but strange enough to warrant my purchasing the DVD, anyway.

I had a look at the clips on youtube. Supermutation is quite possibly the funniest and most annoying thing I've ever seen. THey didnt even look like turtles anymore.

I think it raped my eyesockets.

When it comes to Japanese TMNT, I'd just rather watch the Japanese dub of the old toon's first season.

That's the worst thing with the TMNT name on it. They suck in so many levels I can't even count them.
They turned them into a complete joke. I remember when I first watched them, I was in shock.

Ouch guess I should be ashamed that I helped in the dub for them. I did all the sound effects and I started the project...

I'm surprised at the negative reactions to the OVA episodes. The whole thing is meant to be a parody of both anime cliches and the original TMNT cartoon- it's not meant to be taken seriously! I'm assuming most people just saw a clip or something unsubtitled, because with the translation, it's more obvious that it's an intentional joke. I mean, come on, things like (in the second ep) Splinter unrolling the scroll from the ninjas with the giant "HELP" letters? The recurring joke with the space center guy and the glasses? Also, the Super Mutations are takeoffs on the "transforming character" anime cliche. If you watch anime, you'll find parodies all over the place in a lot of comedies. Sure, it may not be everyone's type of humor, but I just find it a little frustrating when people equate these episodes with something that I really DO find insulting to the TMNT name, like the Next Mutation, or think that this is somehow Japan's serious interpretation of the Turtles. Maybe you have to be a fan of both anime and TMNT to find it funny, but I really liked these (although I guess that's obvious from my avatar).

My friends are all serious anime fans (we staffed at Anime USA together, for instance) and they still loathed the things.

I mean, they're just as ridiculous as the Old Toon episodes made in the US. I mean, that show hardly ever took itself seriously, constantly breaking the fourth wall (referring to episodes and even addressing the audience).

I think they just didn't like that it was so different. By trying to parody all the worst things about anime it...became all the worst things about anime. At least, that's how they interpretted it.

For a change - I really enjoy this stuff, especially the design of the "ordinary" turtles. One of my favourite TMNT incarnations, too bad there were only two episodes produced. Should be taken with a grain of salt of course, but it's pretty relaxing to watch.

Same here. Like Shredder said, this series was intended to be a parody, and I find it fun to watch. Personally, I can't understand how people (not just DrSpengler's friends, but others who posted in this thread and in other places I've seen) could get upset by something as goofy as this.

Then again, my favorite TMNT universe is the original cartoon, and I guess it all boils down to the fact that some people take the TMNT much more seriously than others. Those of us who are fans of the original cartoon typically enjoy the comedy aspect of the TMNT and would be more likely to appreciate something like this where humor is the main focus. On the other hand, some comic and 2K3 fans can't stand anything TMNT-related that isn't "dark and gritty," so the old cartoon and the OVA don't fit their mature vision of the TMNT. To each his own.

The fact of the matter is that all they did with these animés was to get a generic animé story with 'fairies of light' and so on, and then they slapped the Turtles name on it to get ratings.

I myself love those episdoes, because they're so over-the-top that they become parodies of themselves, and since #1, TMNT has been a parody. Some of y'all forget that I think.

After having the files on my PC for years I finally got the DVD and showed these to my good friend (who got me into anime way back in junior high) and he was doubled over in laughter. That's what these are all about.

Oh and dig those kick-ass Japanese toy commercials!

I agree wholeheartedly. You can tell just by watching that it's nothing more than a parody of a parody.

Seriously the only thing I like about them is how they drew April in them.

I loved the anime so much just because it was so over the top and stuffed with your typical anime plots. I really got a kick out of the super mutations and krangs voice, my god I was laughing for hours.
