this is all interesting. I thought turtles had no feeling in their shells at all. I guess it goes to show how tough Leo is for being able to move around after getting a chunk of his shell scrapped off if it's that painful.

Um you basically asked why a predator would boink a turtle.... what you meant was consume...

Turtle shells are rather fascinating... I have 2 that I've baught (one at an auction, the other at an Indian shop in Tombstone) intact and one of them has the backbone still attached.
