No. I'm not saying that at all. As comic properties Avengers has TMNT beat hands down..although I wouldn't be suprised if the Archie book at its peak outsold the Avengers although that wouldn't be hard as the Avengers have hardly ever been a sales success.

Heavy weights though? Within the fictional Marvel Universe Captain America, Thor and Iron Man are heavy weights. In the real world they are not.

Marvel's most popular characters in real life are universe's second stringers, the off beat or freakish characters like Spider-Man, Hulk and the X-Men particularly Wolverine. Hence to make the Avengers a success in the comic world Quesada had redesign them to include these characters.

My main point was that if you mention the Avengers to your average joe outside the relatively small comic buying audience and they'll probably think you're refering to the british tv show with John Steed and Emma Peel than Earth's Mightiest Heroes. So without a hint of irony I say that the TMNT is more known.

I concede that the movie has now made Iron Man well known with the public and the jury is still out on what will happen with Cap and Thor. I also concede that public awareness only counts for so much...many more know the Hulk better than they knew Iron Man but Tony Stark had the better movie and thus got better success.

Right...Spider-man's a second tier hero of the Marvel universe....HE'S THE FREAKIN' FACE OF THE COMPANY!!! You don't get much more 1st tier than SPIDER-MAN!!!

That's not completely true. X-Men never sold well in the 60's. I could easily believe that the Fantastic Four sold more numbers back then but there is no way that X-Men was selling more then both issues. X-Men was doing terrible and was always on the risk of cancellation.

Which it was, when X-Men was brought back in 1976, it started overshadowing the Avengers. The Dark Phoenix Saga was probably one of Marvel's biggest stories in the 70's, but the Avengers had The Kree/Skrull War saga, a major event that's still considered one of the better stories by Marvel.

They had a steady fanbase in the 80's and 90's. The Turtles were bigger in those days.

Avengers made a big splash again in the comics with New Avengers #1 back in 2004, when Bendis added in Spider-Man, Wolverine and other Street Heroes to the team. He either saved or ruined the book.

But I think with the upcoming TMNT stuff, they could easily get a bigger fanbase then Avengers might get with their current cartoon, comic line and film series, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Let me break it down simply...READ CAREFULLY

In real life Spider-Man is Marvel's flagship character. The face of the company as you put it and is up there with big league comic characters like Batman and Superman.

In the FICTIONAL Marvel Universe Spidey has always been second tier hero. A simple street level hero that fights simple villains and only peripheraly gets involved with the big leagues.

Yes and pointed that out in my original post..."in the 60's they were vastly outsold by Fantastic Four and beyond that they were vastly outsold by the X-Men."

Since Hulk flopped miserably, I doubt he's going to be in it. My guess is they're going to replace him with Spider-Man.

It's been confirmed a long time ago that Mark Ruffalo is playing Hulk in the Avengers.

Mark Ruffalo is playing Bruce Banner/Hulk. It was revealed at last years Comic Con in San Diego.

The movie rights for Spider-Man is owned by Sony. So they can't use him in any of their movies. But even if they could, I doubt they would have Spider-Man join the Avengers so soon. All the current films are re-telling tales from the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Not anymore. They're both on the main team now.

Sorry for the double post, but I would hardly call making $263,000,000 on a $150,000,000 budget a "miserable flop".

No. Just...no. I'm already really, really aggrevated that they ARE doing this things as a straight live-action flick, with the Turtles (and possibly Splinter (although they might just go the puppet-route for him again) done by stuntmen/actors in costumes (ala the '90's movies), rather than a hybrid, with April, Casey and all the other HUMAN actors as regular, NON-amimated humans; etc.; and the Turtles and Splinter done in CGI animation, like they did with the Transformers, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Scooby Doo; etc.; movies. In fact, I was really hoping that they'd do this as a hybrid. It would've worked TONS better that way! IMHO.

Not THIS again! gobo-bro, I really, really hope that you're being funny/sarcastic with this. Speaking just for myself, I've had about enough of this Mayan Doomsday Calender/The World's Gonna End in 2012 bullcrap to last me another 54 years!!!

I can't wait for the liveaction/cgi turtles. Just look at Hellboy, Davy Jones, Freddy (Michael Bay Freddy) they look great. I love well made costumes in films. I wouldn't ever want to see CGI turtles with actual people it looks so bad in my opinion. CGI makes things look completely fake. In Alvin and the Chipmunks, Scooby Doo, Avatar. I dislike fully CGI creatures in films, the creatures usually look horribly unrealistic with actual living things around them. CGI is nice when it not used as much. CGI looks great with other CGI objects though, because it is keeping more in theme.

I just have to suspend my beliefs so much more for fully CGI made things, for they look fake in scenarios with actual objects and people near by. It just doesn't do it for me :/ And thank god the film isn't going that route.

Cool.....so comic books this year, tv series next year and the movie in 2013. I think it would have been a bit much to pack everything into one year, at least this way we know they're using that time to focus on each avenue separately.

Wasn't at one point the plan to have real costumes with cgi heads? That still sounds best to me.

No. Of course not. The movie rights are owned by Sony. They are currently doing a reboot to keep the character.
The Avengers is a Marvel Production/Disney. They can only use characters that are not currently licensed to other companies.

So they can't use The X-Men, Fantastic Four, Daredevil (20th Century Fox), Ghost Rider (Lionsgate), Blade (Time Warner) and various related characters.

I would at least like to see a mixture of CGI and live action, you just get such a great full range of motion with the CGI that just is never going to be as possible with guys in suits. And I REALLY want some kick ass martial arts fight scenes in this film!
