why do you think TMNT became a cult phenomenon?

As many of us are well aware, the TMNT started as a one issue parody of the most popular comic book series of the 1980s. Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird never intended to make a regular comic book series, as it was something they did when they were bored.

When they showed off their comic, people looking at them were very interested, and the initial 3,000 copies were sold out out in a matter of one day. It then went on to become a cult phenomenon.

my question is, why did TMNT become so popular, as many parody comics were highly unsuccessful and only lasted a couple of issues and then faded into obscurity, never to be heard of again, yet TMNT always sold well and got good feedback. why is this, in your opinion.
