Why was it always "another dimension?"

So I've been re-watching all the OT this week, and virtually every occasion that an alien race appears, they are always referred to as being from "another dimension".
Why was this? What made the creators of the series think that no other life could exist in our own vast and unexplored universe?

Why do different dimensions pretty much consist of one planet/race/location?

Pretty much the only time we ever hear about different alien races co-existing in the same universe is in Dimension X. There's the Neutrinos, Krang's race, and a bunch more as seen in Dimension X Story when Vernon finds himself in the fight club.

Note: I haven't got past season 4 yet (and that's after watching 87 episodes straight!!), so if anything happens later on contrary to all this, please let me know below!
