[Question] When threads fall off the last page

Considering a lot of subforums only have a minimal amount of pages, what happens when a thread falls off the last page? Is it simply gone or is there an archive somewhere? I've noticed members bring threads back that are from farther back than the last thread in a subforum. How are they magically doing this?
