It would not have cost millions of dollars to change if all the Shredder scenes in the armor were already shot. "Shredder" is 9/10s a CGI construction, so the actor who's "in" the suit is inconsequential.
Literally, the only thing they would need to do, IF they changed it at the last minute, is shoot a very small number of scenes with an Asian actor, do a little creative editing of scenes already shot, and re-do a couple lines of audio/dialog. It absolutely could have been done over a weekend for almost nothing. As I stated elsewhere, one of the Wolverine movies (almost sure it was the first but I can't remember, have not seen either, and admittedly am not as invested in those movies as others are, this is based on an article I read with the director recently) was having major changes made on-set AS they were filming. The movie that was scripted was not the movie that was made, as the studio would literally fax over new instructions every morning, instructing the director to excise characters that were already cast, add new ones, change entire plot points drastically from what was written down, etc. Obviously the director was not happy with this, nor were the crew, especially those who were expecting the movie to be the same as the script they all had a copy of, but every day, they essentially had to start over from scratch and somehow make a coherent movie out of it. The only thing "mandatory" were certain CGI-heavy action scenes that the studio had more or less already paid for. The story and characters that linked those scenes, however, were deemed inconsequential. So, in looking at that example, and strictly going by how movies are made, how "The System" works, if you can more or less entirely make a movie up as you go along even after you're already started shooting, it makes no sense to even suggest that they couldn't change to Sachs to Saki at the last minute. They can, and by all objective evidence, they did. "Fox was pregnant" is a convenient cover, sure, but I actually think that would be deemed more of a waste of money by the studio than sticking Saki in at the last minute. They'd say "Just edit around her". People can believe what they want, but the simpler explanation is, they changed Sachs to Saki because fans complained. And hey, I give them credit for listening to fans, but as others have said, it seems like they missed the "why" of it all. |
