The mask is iconic imagery. That actually has an important design purpose.

Imagine if they made a Captain America movie where his shield was too heavy to carry so he stopped using it. Or a Superman movie where his cape kept flying in his face so he threw it in the garbage. Or a Spider-Man movie where Spidey is allergic to his webs so he just takes the bus to fight crime. Y'see?

The writers probably think they're being clever when they do stuff like this. But all they're really doing is diminishing the iconic imagery of these characters and damaging the character shorthand that serves an important purpose both to storytelling and their visual appeal.
