I kinda want to see an incarnation where Splinter has done terrible stuff in the past but in the present try to make up for it by teaching the turtles to be better than him and try to become a better. Only for victems of his past to spring up and wanting retribution for his sins.
He could have killed Oroku Nagi (just kicking him from a tall mountain in Japan).
