10 years since the sale... thoughts?
![]() ![]() Rewind to 2009, when Peter sold TMNT to Viacom for 63 million dollars a year ago last month. Just 3 years later, George Lucas sold Star Wars for 4.05 billion dollars in 2012. Also, what is it about October? Laird closed his deal on 10/19/09 and Lucas closed his on 10/30/12. Was Star Wars really THAT much of a bigger property? Was Peter ripped off? Like, let's break it down. Sure, Star Wars is and was bigger than TMNT overall... but it terms of net worth, is TMNT really worth 1.5% as much as Star Wars? Because that's what 63 million is against 4.05 billion. Turtlemania, Fred Wolf cartoon and movies and all of that... 63 million to own it all? Really? We know Peter's thoughts on it. From 10/24/09: "You got ripped off -- TMNT's worth WAY more than 60 million!" This is another comment which has been repeated... of course, it is also one which is stated with no facts to back it up. Please keep in mind that I had consulted with smart advisers who know about this kind of stuff, who had studied and researched how to evaluate the dollar value of a property like TMNT in real-world terms. In one sense, it's kind of flattering that people would think it's worth a lot more... but it also reveals a profound naiveté about the realities of business.
