I get that teasing and ribbing can be a kind of camaraderie in real life — but in TMNT (Raphael) it often comes across less as playful and more as hostile. When that gets written into TMNT again and again, it stops looking like “brotherly banter” and starts looking like normalized bullying.
My point isn’t that tropes don’t exist — it’s that some tropes carry baggage. Constantly portraying a teenage boy as angry, combative, and abusive doesn’t just read as “relatable,” it reinforces toxic masculinity and excuses bad behavior as if it’s natural. That’s the line I’m drawing: are we celebrating depth in Raphael, or just recycling a cliché that makes him shallow? It’s not “personal gripe,” it’s media critique. Writers choose which traits to glorify — and when anger is glorified over empathy or gentleness, that shapes how fans interpret the character and what behavior feels acceptable. |
