The Ninja Turtles Timeline

Just a question about the timeline in the new series' universe. What year is it in the Turtles universe? Since its based from the comics, wouldn't the chronology of the story takes place in the exact same order for the animated series as well?

I'm just really confused about the timeline, since the Ninja Turtles cartoon is based from the comics.
