Comic Virgin! Help!

So, like a lot of people, my first exposure to TMNT was the original 80's cartoon, followed by the movies. It wasn't until many years later that I learned that:

A. It was originally a comic book and-
B. they all wore red bandanas!

(that last one was most shocking of all haha).

But anywho, I've recently kinda been intrigued to read some of the original comics. Does anyone have any suggestions for me on where to start? How many issues were there originally? Any advice/info is appreciated
