Because the writers probably didn't watch 2k3 or know a lot about it, it's not like Klunk was that important in 2k3. The fact the cat is not orange already shows they don't know about klunk. It'd be a great throwback but they likely don't know about him and it's just a coincidence.

I wouldn't say that. Keep in mind Karai is going to be in the new series at some point. Besides I'm pretty sure the writers did their homework and researched both the Mirage comics and the 4Kids toon.

You do realize Klunk originated from Mirage, right? I also wouldn't say Klunk was not important to 2k3, given that his "death" was pretty significant to the plot of the episode "Bad Day".

I didn't realize he was from mirage, I thought he was only from 2k3, so while I'm not convinced his name will be klunk I think the chances are definitely much higher than if he had only been a 2k3 character.

The Christmas Aliens episode that introduced Klunk was directly based on the Michelangelo one shot comic from Mirage that also introduced Klunk.

I've thought about that too. Spike seems really mellow and it doesn't appear like he'd be annoyed by a playful kitten.
