I never said he was for others. He wasn't. I thought his character was going to be portrayed in this series as very very stereotypically nerdy, meaning a pushover my default. I'm glad the series didn't go that route. I should've reworded it.

I'm glad Donny isn't being portrayed as a pushover in this particular incarnation, despite coming across as nerdier when compared to the other mediums I've been exposed to (OT, original movie trilogy, TNM, 2k7 film, Mirage, Archie).

The way the sentence was worded really made it seem like you were saying he was a pushover in other series. Might want to watch that next time.

If that wasn't your implication, then, I'm not too sure how it was relevant. Don has never been a pushover so why would they start now? He's a ninja.

That just shows how stuck behind the times I am regarding fictional nerds and their portrayals.

Er... yeah, I guess I am too. I had no idea that all fictional nerds were exactly like Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons. j/k

You must be mixing with the wrong crowd, cause most fictional nerds I know are nice.

Even nerds in the real world are nice. And going on a rant is not nerds exclusive, just about anyone can go on a rant. How is that being an "asshole" to you I don't wanna know.

I don't think you can associate being an ass hole or being nice to the nerd archetype, because being a nerd doesn't necessarily affect how you interact with others. (and they're both applicable to many characters that fall under this category, supported by the good examples NetKeeper and Shark-Blade provided ) There are plenty of amicable and non-amicable people, that just happen to also be nerdy

I'm still getting used to it but I do kind of like how Don in the Nick series is more short tempered, because it sort of has him represent the different variants of the brainiac character. His 2k3 incarnation is calmer/nicer, and the 2k12 one is quicker to argue with the others or become irritable- or just be outright sarcastic

2k3 Don had his cranky moments as well.

I don't like how the uptight 2k12 Don has his bo staff shoved up his ass. Raph is supposed to be the short-tempered one. Don is supposed to be more calm, along with Leo. That's how it's always been.

First off, every version of the TMNT has added a new dynamic to each turtle. Hell, OT Raph is miles apart from virtually every other Raphael ever yet. Sarcastic, cutting his moments with humor, rather than being mad all the time. Nick Leo is sort of a geeky otaku. These are just two examples, of course, but they're well-received and keep things fresh.

Secondly, that's not how it's always been, man. Mirage Don (Image era, especially) is wound pretty tight. He's more of a loner with a dark side there. I think it's fair to say that most Donatellos have the trait of being very stressed out, it's just a matter of each version handling that trait differently. Intelligent people are often burdened by their talents, as they find it harder to relate to other people, and as a result can be easily frustrated.

Mirage is the exception rather than the rule because all of the turtles are pretty different there. Regardless, Mike and Raph are the wilder ones in Mirage, IIRC [though I will admit Mirage is not my strong point], which still demonstrates that Don and Leo are supposed to be the calmer ones. It's still always been that way.

I don't like Don exhibiting unnecessary manpain. That's Raph and Leo's job. I prefer it when he handles his stress in a more mild-tempered manner, because damn it somebody needs to be able to handle **** without making a dumb; I feel Don is best suited for that because he values acting intelligently.

Mirage is the source material, to say it's the exception rather than the rule is straight up ignorant. & if you were fluent in it, you'd know my points stand firm. You try to counter what I've said but then go on to say that you're not well versed in the comics, so I can't really take you all that seriously. Michelangelo went on to become a published romance novel writer who babysat shadow, was the emotional heart of the team, even the main one to have romantic interests. Not so much wild. Raphael, sure, he's the hot-head, but even he has his moments. Leonardo has taken heads, done some pretty brutally violent stuff. Donatello has used guns and kept Stockman chained to a wall in a secret room. He's got a very dark side. If memory serves, right in the first issue he's the one who sends Shredder to his death off the roof of a building with a bo to the face. Hell, in vol. 3 he tried to kill his own brothers, he once even beat the snot out of Casey Jones while they were alone. He's no more calm than his brothers in the OT, film series (where, in fact, in Secret Of The Ooze, he's pretty neurotic. I mean, his whole shtick in the film is that he's having an existential crisis.). So, again, no, it's not always been that way by any stretch of the imagination. You just prefer it to be.

Nobody is "supposed" to be any way, per se. Sure, they have basic personalities, as set by Playmates toys, but they are at the core of things, "people", & teenagers at that. Malleable, coming into their own, impressionable. & like people, they have a strong range of emotion, they go through it all. Being a prankster doesn't mean you can't be a bully too. Being calm doesn't mean you can't have a head full of stress. etc

Okay. You don't have to take me seriously. In fact, in my first post I recommended the exact opposite.

But anyway, when I said Mirage was an exception, I meant that it plays by a different scale because things are much darker there. Much less kid-friendly.

I knew all those things. [But doesn't Mirage Donatello dislike guns?] I also remember Mike and Raph sparring and whatnot. Also, aren't these profiles based on the Mirage turtles? The information here pretty much makes everything you've said about Mirage Don invalid.

That said, I don't remember this. Damn.

I never said Don is never stressed. I just prefer it when he handles that stress in a more level-headed manner, which Secret of the Ooze Don most certainly did. Compare him to original movie Raph. I like it when Raph handles stress badly and Don copes with it maturely.

I never said anything in opposition to this?

Too lazy to make separate quotes, hopefully it'll make sense just the same.

Mirage isn't as kid-friendly, true, but I don't see why that counts it out as an important reference for a characters base personality traits. You said "that's how its always been" and I proved that wrong. You can't say "That doesn't count! It's not a kids show!". That's absurd.

As for the profiles, they were from a publication that is taken with a grain of salt by most fans, as it was riddled with information that was not submitted nor approved by Eastman & Laird, contradictions, and came out WAY before many core comic stories happened. I don't think the fellas were even into Vol. 2 yet. So, not invalid.

Key word, "prefer". To be fair though, there's one thing you have to understand about the Nick series that really sets it apart from the rest. For the first time, the creative team is really pushing the teenager angle of things, and so they are all still developing their personalities (the turtles, I mean, not the staff). That's why Mikey is hyper, Leo is insecure, Donnie is on edge, & Raph is intolerant. Their plan from the beginning was to show us how they become the personalities that are most known to the fandom. So, if things go as plan, these characteristics will have died down by season 3 or 4, and the boys will be stronger, smarter, and more competent. I for one, am enjoying that transition.

Not what I meant, either. I didn't mean to imply mirage wasn't important or didn't matter. Sorry if that was the implication.

This I did not know, either. Had no idea how old that book was.

If this turns out to be true I'd pretty willingly give up a lot of the problems I have with 2k12 [a lot, but not all; I feel they act too young and immature for 15 and I'd rather put them at 13 myself and if that was the goal they wanted that would have been an easy way to convey it].

However, considering their lack of consideration and previous track record regarding consistent characterisation, I have my doubts.

It's weird actually, now that I think about it, Raph and Donnie probably both have the same tendency to not talk about their emotions, and channel their stresses into being overachievers. With Raph, he vents his stress on physical pursuits, with Donnie I imagine he pushes himself with his science and techno-projects.

I never minded seeing characters other than Raph being moody or angry - the way I look at it, everyone has a darker side, and the potential for darkness within them, and it's refreshing not always having Raph be the go-to guy for that kind of thing.

Staff comments, podcasts, that sort of thing, they've made it pretty clear that's their mission. Whether or not they're able to succeed (as Nick, Playmates, or Viacom could ultimately step in and insist things stay goofy for the sake of ratings/toy sales) remains to be seen. I have faith, though. I've definitely seen elements of it sprinkled throughout.

I love seeing the turtles express themselves in ways other than what the legacy of Fred Wolf pigeon-holed them to, absolutely. It's more interesting, more relatable, more "human".
