WHY DOES EVERYONE OVERLOOK the already brought up point that NOT ALL KAPPA ARE EVIL and they don't all act that way?!? Japanese pop culture and old legends have portayed them in a positive light, too. You all need to get theis western idea out of your heads that anything with the label 'demon' is evil. There are good and bad kitsune, there are good and bad oni, there are good and bad 'snow maidens', there are good and bad tanooki, and there are good and bad Kappa.

But i totally agree It all about perspective and this Screams TMNT to me Look at 2k3, TMNT III, IDW Nick They all "make" there own Japanese mythos. IN vain of the OG comic taking Comic and playing on them to create there own comic, they take Japanese Lore and Create there own suited for there own story.

My English is far from perfect, but at least I am trying to become better with it and respect some of the basic rules. Like Typing WithouT Capitalizing Random Words and using commas and dots to spearate sentences in different parts which make it easier to understand them Once again, it's not about being specialist in the language, it's about simple respect to the readers, which does not require much on your part. If you choose to not follow such basics - it's quite telling about you and your personality. |

On the left - Hey that looks cool! On the right - WTF? And to your point, I'm all for having an interesting discussion; unfortunately Sam isn't capable of having one, as proven last night. I really don't think adding Kappa to the back story is a positive. I wasn't a fan of the reincarnation aspect of IDW, and I don't like this "everything happens for a reason" storyline. I don't think it makes the turtles "more japanese" or "ties it to Japan" or whatever the hell people are saying. If they had Wolverine eat a stack of pancakes with maple syrup, is he suddenly "tied to Canada" more than he was? The idea is weak sauce. Last edited by Commenter 42; 07-22-2014 at 10:35 PM. |

BUT, your wolverine example doesn't work bc, the turtles aren't eating ramen claiming to have Japanese roots just because. The mythos grounds their existence in the roots of Japanese culture. To me it's very different than just trying to tack it on.

In any-case, that's how I see it. To me it feels like a step away from the turtles mutation being a "special" event, to, "it's happened before". Furthermore, its a re-hash of blue door, meaning it's opening up the possibility of more mutant turtles. |

Funny enough, this whole destiny vs accident argument reminds me of TMNT II SOTO, when Donnie was complaining on the rooftop to everyone that there had to be more to their existence, and it was clear that he was distraught at the thought of being just an accident.

BUT, that is a very natural and important thought to have as a sentient individual.
Doesn't mean you'll like the answer. Most heros have a "destiny". It's the Joseph Campbell myth over and over ad nauseum. Everything has a purpose, everyone has a place, and the hero will triumph, even though he/she doesn't believe it's possible. I prefer the alternate. **** happens. I hate the "I'm the only one who can stop this!" That's both juvenile, and solipsistic. How about, "somebody do something" and the person who DOES, proves to be the hero. I prefer this method of storytelling, as it challenges the writer to come up with a good reason for the protagonist to be involved, or to take action. Destiny is lazy, and from what I've read, not very "Mirage", well, not Very Peter Laird. Laird always kept things grey. No one was every really all good, or all evil..every character was a shade of grey, and for my money, that's a far more compelling idea. Last edited by Commenter 42; 07-23-2014 at 12:44 AM. |

But if you beat them in a sumo match or trick them into spilling their head water they will help you. Anyway..... so the Super Hero formula is actually Shredder having people be possessed by demons? And he tried to summon the Kappa in this generation to trap them so they wont stop his plans but they escaped after the transfer was made? |

Behavior [edit] Kappa are usually seen as mischievous troublemakers or trickster figures. Their pranks range from the relatively innocent, such as loudly passing gas or looking up women's kimonos, to the malevolent, such as drowning people and animals, kidnapping children, and raping women.[14] Kappa are not entirely antagonistic to humankind, however. They are curious of human civilization, and they can understand and speak Japanese. They may even befriend human beings in exchange for gifts and offerings such as nasu (茄子, "Japanese eggplant"), soba (そば or 蕎麦, “buckwheat noodles”) nattō (なっとう or 納豆, "fermented soybeans"), or kabocha (カボチャ, 南瓜, “winter squash”), but especially cucumbers, the only food kappa are known to enjoy more than human children. Once befriended, kappa have been known to perform any number of tasks for human beings, such as helping farmers irrigate their land. Sometimes, they will bring the occasional gift of fresh fish, which is regarded as a mark of good fortune for the family that receives it.[3] They are also highly knowledgeable of medicine, and legend states that they taught the art of bone setting to humankind.[14][22][23] Due to these benevolent aspects, some shrines are dedicated to the worship of particularly helpful kappa.[24] There were also festivals meant to placate the kappa in hopes of receiving a good harvest, some of which still take place today. These festivals generally took place during the two equinoxes of the year when the kappa traveled from the rivers to the mountains and vice versa.[3] Kappa may also be tricked into helping people. Their deep sense of decorum will not allow them to break an oath, for example; so if a human being can dupe a kappa into promising to help him, the kappa has no choice but to follow through. EDIT: I just found this. Not sure if you folks have seen it: http://www.legendoftheyokai.com/ Just posting a few: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
