One bad review, and about 5 other good ones. If you don't like the movie, that will never change. As much as you try to like it, you wont. The designs are going to be in this movie, and you will always prefer the older look. The story might blow you away, but the look of the turtles might keep you away. August 8th will not change one single mind. You have chosen your opinion as soon as you saw those turtles. Everyones mind is made up. You can try and tell yourself or others you still hold out hope, but you know you hate it. I say dont see it. Wait for it to hit redbox or netflix. Do not pay for something you will not be satisfied with. As for me. I will be there at a 12 am showing. With my 3 little brothers in our different colored masks. Cowa-F@#$^&-bunga

I agree with this 100%

I guess we'll never get a dark-themed tmnt movie
Was TMNT ever really meant for a hyper dark gritty version? I mean the whole point of tmnt in the first place was for it to be a parody of dark gritty comics. The hyper campy dialogue in the mirage comics made it fun. stuff like, " Getting rid of vile dung like you!" or, "catch you on the flip side Greenie!!" Am I wrong? Do people really take the TMNT universe to be on par with with Watchmen? 300? The Dark Tower? I mean TMNT as had some serious moments but to ever think it was dark, gritty, and thought provoking imo is kinda strange.

Of course I have. They end up fighting against alien triceratops. April was a drawing. Miky was a famous book writer. Sure we have gotten some serious stuff sometimes, but to really think it has ever been some kind of Nolan's Dark knight tale is just strange to me. Dont get me wrong I would love a serious dark, gritty movie, but to honestly think it has ever been that is kinda strange imo.

Tales is FULL of introspection, stories that pull at your heart strings, & all sorts of thought provoking material. Vol. 1, short of it's guest era, is pretty somber from issue 8 onward. Vol. 3 is immensely violent. Vol. 4 is very cerebral. Much of it's subtle, maybe it went over your head. Sure there are sci-fi elements & shots of humor along the way, but that doesn't take away from its overall grim tone. If the book wasn't so depressing & deep, we'd have seen it represented elsewhere by now.

That's actually true. Tales are the only TMNT Comics I own and that's because they're freaking amazing!

And once again we witnessing here how some people, in an attempt to justify questionable choices, that the new movie had made, start to badmouth past incarnations of the franchise and downplay some important aspects of them. Yeah, sure, why not. Let's hate on the past of the series to protect new product.

In my eyes such feeble attempts clearly mean one thing - questionable, zealous, almost mindless devotion of some people, which is hard to take seriously and is not really good thing for the series in the long run. Also, the fact that in order to make new product look better, some people need to downplay, ignore or proclaim outright hateful stuff about some past incarnations, tells volumes about how weak new version of the TMNT is. If it was project with true quality and, what some people can call "soul", then there would have been no need for such thing.

Finally, a sane person.

TMNT, and superheroes in general, work better when you don't take them too seriously, especially in Turtles case. It's too damn ridiculous to be on par with something like Watchmen or stuff like that and at it's core it's a parody, that's why it's endured for so long. It takes all the conventions and tropes of superhero comics and throws them back in a quirky way. It's goofy, weird, and fun. Those are it's strengths.

Man, this forum is starting to make me feel bad for liking this movie. I'm really excited about this film but it's kinda sad seeing this getting into some people's head. I really hope you get your dream TMNT someday.

I just don't get why some people are still complaining.

So it isn't going to be dark and gritty but at least the movie is going to be PG13 so they be still showing a lot of stuff that they can't show in a cartoon.

The sexual comments in this movie, don't you get that in every comic book film.

I think you all to calm down and wait for the reviews to come in and if they are bad then you can start argueing

It doesn't mean you need to turn it into ape**** riduluous insane ****fest.

Besides, as it was said before, nothing precludes authors from creating semi-serious works even with goofy premise like TMNT is. Inability of most authors to do it, is only telling about their personal shortcomings as a writers. And the fact that you personally ready to settle down for something less then average, goofy, stupid and fun, doesn't tell about quality and potential of the series, what it should be or how it should be presented and treated by others.

As I said before - serious works about TMNT do exist, it's undeniable fact. Some of them were succesfull, which automatically debalces the whole ****** idea, that TMNT should be only riduculous fun.

Megan on April's connection with the turtles

I don’t know what I’m allowed to reveal and not reveal… Her dad was a scientist whose experiments were being funded by… a shadowy figure… and there’s a lab fire. Her father dies in the lab fire. She loses him and it’s not until she starts hearing their names when she meets them on the roof that things start firing off in her brain and she goes and she digs through all of her father’s old lab notes and his books and all of this stuff and she discovers that these quite possibly are the little turtles that she used to look at in his lab before it burned down.
That explains the casting for Young April. And she knew the Turtles when she was a child.

So the quality of a TMNT story depends on how serious the tone is? Did you even read your own signature?

Is that true? I'm sure I saw other negative-to-ambivalent ones. And I wouldn't call any review that doesn't say "this looks bad" to be "good", necessarily...

Yeah, I don't think that's an accurate assessment, though. Yes, the designs are turning a lot of people off, but that's not the only thing, and I don't even think it's the deal-breaker in most cases. It's the whole thing. The style, the plot, the directing, the casting, the humour, and the alterations to the key backstory... they're just divisive. Either you're into it or you're not. And if someone's not, I don't think it's fair to dismiss that by simplifying and making assumptions about their reasons.

TMNT originated as a parody, yeah. And it was a damn good one. But the reason it worked so well as a parody is because Eastman and Laird played it straight. The concept is ridiculous by design, but they didn't treat it as a joke in-story. They let their characters take it seriously, and that's why it worked. I dunno if you've read Raise Some Shell by Richard Rosenbaum, but it makes a very good case for this, and for why that's the concept's major strength.

Of course, as the series went on, it changed and explored other avenues. It could be balls-out goofy/ridiculous, and it could be introspective, thoughtful and grounded, and it could be dark, gritty and "serious". But at its best, it always had a balance.

I would love it if someone could just sit the entire current crop of screenwriters down and tell them: if you make every hero's journey pre-destined or planned, and you reveal that every main character was already tied together before the plot begins, you make their whole "world" SO much smaller and less special.

You know how C-3P0 and R2-D2 just happened to meet Luke Skywalker, and later they and Obi-Wan Kenobi just happened to meet Han Solo and Chewbacca at a bar, and how these chance encounters and their impact on the story made the viewers feel that the world of Star Wars was vast and limitless, and anything was possible? Kind of like real life? Screenwriters: YOU ARE KILLING THAT FEELING. (Much like George Lucas himself did with the prequels, mind you...)
