Oh goddamnit. What's even more worrying is in the clip where they discover it Raph says "we're bulletproof!" not "Our shells are bullet proof"

&%$!! I can see Bay wearing his trollface right now.

Peter and Kevin seemed to genuinely like the comics that were influences on creating the turtles and I'd say they were paying homage to a lot of those comics. Yes there's a certain tongue in cheek aspects like the various names but that's not the same and certainly no would read say Return to New York and say that's mocking anything.
I literally JUST watched Turtle Power: The Definitive History of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I heard with my own ears both Lair and Eastman say it was a commentary and parody of the current *80's state of comic book characters either being teenagers, mutants, or ninjas. They drew them and wrote them as an homage to Frank Miller and Jack Kirby, but the actual concept is a parody of 80's comic books.

Quote:
Also didn't you earlier say you want an "adult" TMNT movie? An R rated one? If that's so then I'm guessing you must think to some degree the comics were adult in nature.
Yes, but guess what, after a few years of the comics, they started gearing TMNT towards children. they literally would create characters to make new toys. This is another reason why this whole "integrity of the turtles' argument ridiculous.

Yeah I want an R rated TMNT movie, I'm not going to get it, I've accepted that. I enjoy the humor of TMNT, it feeds off pop culture, I can deal w/ pop culture humor.

Quote:
Also I disagree with your assessment of Leibesman's comic con interview. An action movie with humor would fall right within the Marvel studio movie tone but he stated it's not that level of seriousness.
Avengers and other Marvel movies have comedic elements, usually from Tony Stark, they are not Action Comedies. TMNT is actually listed as an Action Comedy. They are attempting to make this funny throughout, but there will be serious elements.

Quote:
How were the comics and animated series "limited". If they wanted Donatello to use other more advanced weapons there wouldn't be a problem. In the comics they'd just draw him with one, in the cartoons they'd animate him with it. I really can't see why would think was an issue.
Back then things weren't always trying to be ultra realistic or even look good. When I look at the 90's cartoon or the 2000's cartoon, they both look equally horrible. I don't think they were trying to advance the characters in any way.

Quote:
Also the new show has Donatello using a Bo staff. There was an episode were the staff breaks and he explores using a robot proxy - putting aside that a real bo is actually damn hard to break that episode had him running into trouble using technology and had him reverting to his bo.
That episode had him complaining that his Bo wasn't a good enough weapon, and Splinter tells him he hasn't mastered the Bo yet, and when he does he will get an upgrade, like Mikey has w/ his chucks. By the end of the episode, Donnie get's an attachment to his Bo, which makes it more than just a wooden stick.

Quote:
I should also point out that a metal collapsible bo staff would be fine with me. The fact that it can flip suvs and steel containers is were it gets stupid.
You're just being close minded. Again, he can have ALL this tech but he can't make his weapon advanced? He just uses a boring old stick? No, this current version of Donnie obviously has him inventing things, it only makes sense his weapon of choice is more than a stick.

Quote:
I've made this point this point before that I believe the movies should be the definitive version. What has been proven to work best for the franchise in all the other versions.

Like I said it seems to work for Marvel and DC who are copying stories, most from even further back.
All these movies make changes...I'm not understanding why the turtles having changes is so ridiculous? They used to be little naked turtles, now they have some clothing, advanced weapons, and they're bigger (I would prefer if they were shorter).

Quote:
So why did you say you hated the whole idea of the turtles being aliens? After all they should be adding new elements and changing everything right? Why were you so closed minded?
My main issue w/ them possibly being Aliens was because I saw an Eastman quote where he said it was an interesting idea to have a planet of turtles. To me that made them less unique, and also the were no longer Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, they're now Turtles from Space.

Quote:
Captain America is supposed to have a bullet proof shield and has always been depicted having. The turtles are not supposed to have bullet proof shells and never been depicted as having them.
Again, it's an adaptation, no movie goes fact for fact, word for word from the source material. There is no rule that says if it hasn't been written it can't be done in the movie.

One more thing, there is like 5 minutes of total footage out there, how do you know if the comedy holds up, or what is ruined from the TMNT history? You are writing a movie review for a movie you've never seen, it's ridiculous. I'm not sure if I'll like it or not, but I'm not going to make a decision until I see it.

You're all missing the point of characters like Superman, Hulk, and now TMNT I guess...

It's not about themselves being hurt, it's about the things they love being hurt. No matter how indestructible Superman is, the fear of losing Ma or Lois is bigger than the fear of him losing his own life.

The main theme of the original movie was the loss of Splinter and then saving Splinter. It's not about them saving themselves from being injured or dying.

The turtles were in danger throughout that movie. Good stories, regardless of what they are about, are ones that put the main character or hero in danger because we want to see how they survive.

Also if the turtles are bulletproof now because of the mutation then what superpowers should we expect from Splinter?

Well I'm never thinking the main hero of these types of movies is ever going to be seriously injured or die, because that wouldn't make sense. Also they are putting their lives on the live to protect their city, country, friends, loved ones. That to me is where the true weakness for all super heroes. There is a reason they all have alternate identities, to protect the people they love.

And yes I know Captain America can die in the next few movies, or if they make another Green Lantern...Again the main story when it comes down to it, is keeping their loved ones safe.

Agree to disagree I guess. Protecting others is great and all, but if there's no threat to the heroes then why I should I care? And sure you can say, "well they aren't going to kill Batman" or whatever, but that's what I mean. A good well-written story with real stakes can engage you in a way that you can think it's possible. When it shows the hero IS vulnerable and can be hurt then you worry about them and you want to see them overcome.

...okay, that's really disappointing to see, not what I expected at all! I'd be able to handle bulletproof shells, but skin...? No! Best I can hope for now is that the animators and director/writers weren't communicating and it's a mistake in that shot, but I sadly doubt I'll be that lucky. Dammit, movie! You were just starting to look good!

I'd say TMNT is very much the same. We've seen them dodge laser and gunfire because of their stealth and martial arts skills. They are not faster than bullets but they are faster than the people firing them.

There's also the standard conceit that antogonists conveniently have poor aim. It'd be pretty novel if the turtles ever did take a bullet but in this version it wouldn't matter, they'd flex thst part of their body and shoot it back out.
Ehh, I wouldn't put the way Spidey dodges gunfire in with how Batman and the turtles would, but I think I got ya.

Amount of double standarts coming from people (well, more like person in this case) who want to protect this movie is OVER9000. Especially, this "you missing the point of superheroes movies..." What in the world? Oh, I guess, they missing those points because they don't share his opinion. Just as usual.

Quote:
You sit there and say they "change things for no reason" but you haven't seen the movie, you have NO CLUE what they changed.
Erm, WHAT?
Obivouly different designs for the Turtles and the Shredder, some disclosed changes of the story amount to nothing?! Wow. You bizzaro reality...is bizzaro.

Quote:
And why do you want a carbon copy of something that's already been created?
How to explain this to you...
I don't want carbon copy, but I want something, that contains core elements of what made previous iterations of the story work. As far as this Bay-o-rama goes, I don't see it. It slaps some external stuff from different versions of the Turtles and changes some conceptual things, that shouldn't be changed. Or at least not changed like it was done there.

Making Turtles big, apparently nigh invulnerable and superstrong...defeats the whole purpose why they were interesting as a heroes in the first place.
My favorite characters are those who can be vulnerable. That's why I initially liked TMNT and certain incarnations of Batman and that's why I don't find stories about Superman interesting.

Quote:
Besides money, the reason things get changed is because creative people get together and come up with ideas they think can enhance the product. Nobody went into this movie saying how can we make this worse?
Definitely not.
They just went with what worked on their another property Transformers and applied those changes to the TMNT.

Transformers as a movies are complete and utter garbage. They're CGI entertaining fest, which contains little to no coherent storytelling, interesting and memorable characters. It's just overexcessive mindless fun (which could be genuinly interesting at times), which brings money. And they have just put all this overexcessiveness stuff to the TMNT, hoping that it will bring money.
It's not about "making it worse", it's about making money from the property. Calling those people creative - is too much. They did with TMNT what they have done with Transformers. Making everything bigger and louder doesn't need creativity.

I give this movie a look, obviously not in the cinema. I won't support this project with my money. But I'd do this just because it vaguely related to the franchise which was big part of my life.

Quote:
You sound dumb when you say they change things for no reason. When the comics and cartoons have all had different writers and stories, they change things all the time, but again, for whatever reason if it's changed in a movie YOU'RE WHOLE LIFE IS RUINED
You sound no less dumber, attacking me. Besides, I have never said stuff like "MY WHOLE LIFE IS RUINED" because of this flick. Either you just trying to provoke me or just don't know any better.
What I meant about changes for no reason, it's even, if I understand why they did them, there was no reason to do it like that.

Actually I was describing certain super heroes who cannot be injured physically, like Superman, and The Hulk, and now that it's pretty much confirmed they're bulletproof, the Turtles. I was saying that there is something on the line with these characters even though they physically cannot be hurt, but their loved ones can.

There has been no check list of changes made public. There is about 5 minutes of total footage out there with all the trailers. Physically they're different looking, but guess what? EVERY. SINGLE. VERSION. OF. THE. TURTLES. HAVE. BEEN. DIFFERENT. The common complaint is that they're not the turtles they know... Well if you liked the Turtles who appeared with the Power Rangers, you're right, these new guys are totally different. The 2003 cartoon is different than the '87 cartoon. If you still can't wrap your head around this, let me know I can make more examples.

Michael Bay did not direct this movie. Stop it. I can't take anyone serious who throws out the "classic Michael Bay movie" as a reason why the movie is bad. You don't know if it's bad or not. This is absolute silliness. Every movie is made to make money. The precious TMNT's that you are worried about losing that sweet innocence, used to create characters just so they could sell them as toys, to MAKE MONEY. This franchise has been a gold mine pumping out the next kid toy for decades. There is no difference between what the toy makers and cartoon story tellers did/do, and what this movie is trying to do. If anything, I don't know if I would buy a toy w/ these turtles, i find it hard to believe little kids will like the way they look, I'm still trying to get used to it.

You say they're doing what they did to Transformers. Well you haven't seen more than 5 minutes of this movie so you have no credibility in that statement.

It's still massive dynamic change. Change which was not necessary, if you ask me. Besides, it's not like Turtles has a lot of "loved ones".

I call the crap on this one.
Yes, Turtles were different, but not to THAT EXTENT. They were generally agile human-sized (smaller or bigger), not bulletproof hulklings with colossal physical strength and TURTLELIPS. And they were not dressed into various amounts of crap. The only series where they were more dressed more then usual is...Next Mutation, which kind of brings to mind unsettling parallels.

What Power Rangers has to do with anything?
It seems you need to wrap your mind around this: I understand that those Turtles are different, but I DON'T LIKE NOT THE FACT THAT THEY ARE DIFFERENT, but HOW THEY ARE DIFFERENT.
I bolded most important parts for you, because, it's usual for people I'm talking with, to miss (on purpose?) important points for the sake of pretending, that they were not able to explain their points to me.

Are you by chance Michael Bay? Because, you seem so offended that I have suggested that this movie will be like his Trasformshlock.

Also, I should have maken it clear that my opinion on the movie is based on the trailers and other information, that is in the public access. And so far everything points in the direction of the Bayformers. This style is basically all over the movie: overexcesiveness in everything, stupid humor, editing, camera work.

Gee...first rational post from you in this conversation.
For me movie will be slightly ruined because they are big. It will be a movie quite different in its "ideology" from other incarnations of Turtles and this particular difference is not one I'd like to see.

Golly. I don't even know how to explain it to you, because you so missed the mark...
'K, I'll try.
I now that everything in the media is made for money (well, mostly). However, there are times, when it does not stop writers from telling a good story. And sometimes the whole project is so money-oriented that it overshadows everything else. New TMNT shapes to be in the latter category. Desire to make money is completely throws any kind of semblance of logic, taste and moderation out of the window.

Man / Woman / Human Being / Whoever you are - you are positively hiiiiiiilarious!!
Yeah, of course, redesigns, action scenes, dialogues, camera work, known story details are not enough to discern the general style and direction of the movie...and I mean not quality, but only style. Though in this case quality and style are usually go hand in hand. Or rather style usually walks alone. With pockets full of money.

Well, it seems that is not enough data to figure out style for some people. It seems that's how it works for the people who absolutely can't see difference in any kind of style (but then why those people would vehemently fight to protect their opinion since it clearly doesn't matter for them what to watch?). Sadly I can see general style directions, and really this movie have BAY written all over it in bold letters. Unless Platinum Dunes trailermakers were ingenious to the point that they were able to make this movie look 180 degrees opposite of what it is (which is doubtful, based on previews), this will be another Bay-o-rama, more or less.

Bwa-ha-ha-ha. I am as far from the closeminded person as possible.
Let me put it for you as simple as I can:
I don't support ****** decisions made out of creative bunkruptcy and desire to follow modern trends to the point where it overshadows everthing else, including core ideas of the franchise. My biggest care is simple: to have a good story and this take on the TMNT won't have it, I almost can guarantee it.
You kind of openmindedness is not a good one.

@Sumac

This is getting redundant. My main argument is to let the movie come out, go see it, then make a decision if it's good or not. Movies should not be judged by movie trailers. You say you got other info about the plot, how do you know that's correct info?

People are getting too tied up in the littlest things, like the types of jokes being toilet humor or sexual. Just for the hell of it last night, i watched the first '87 cartoon, and Michelangelo burps for like 5 seconds to impress his brothers, and they ask splinter if they can basically keep April hostage.

The movie is trying to be it's own thing, which is not such a bad thing, unless it's bad. Just let the dang movie come out first.

If you think you're being original with your Michael Bay hatred, you're not. It's basically an Internet Meme at this point. The guy makes MONEY. A LOT of people go see his movies and enjoy them. He's made some really bad movies, and he's made some really good movies. I never liked Transformers as a kid, so I'm no fanboy of that, so I actually enjoyed his movies for what they are, BIG SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS. Michael Bay's production company is attached to this. He did not direct this, or co-direct this, or hold Liebesman's hand. Brad Fuller seems to be the head Producer on this thing. It's odd because the same production company made The Purge movies but Michael Bay doesn't get "blamed" for those....

Lastly, you're not open minded, you are very close minded. You are making judgements on a movie that is 2 weeks away from being released like you've seen the final product. You are unwilling to go in with an open mind and see if you might like some of the updates to the characters.
