It looks... okay, I guess. The only very impressive part of the trailer for me was the use of all the old sound effects.

I'm fine with that bizarre lightsaber, but only if the Sith in question is the only one who has a saber like that. If everyone has one that looks like that... God, I don't even want to think about it.

The movie probably won't be any worse than the prequels, I don't see what people are complaining about.

Let's hope they don't make the same mistake they made in Episode 1 and kill off the new cool bad guy after one movie.

What they did with Dark Maul in episode 1 screwed over the rest of the prequel trilogy and then they had to bring him back anyway over a decade later.

Looks alright. I appreciate the fact that everything looks kind of "old", like it actually looks more like Star Wars than the prequels did. I get that Lucas made the prequels all shiny to illustrate how "fresh" everything was before the rise of the Empire, but it was a visual choice that, in hindsight, it seems most people didn't like.

Kind of "eh" on the new lightsaber, I mean it's a completely pointless design choice but this series is kind of known for that. It serves zero purpose other than to sell more toys, but it's harmless and I doubt it'll affect things much either way. Just a visual.

I think this Abrams dude is generally overrated as f*ck but this should be pretty good.

To be fair, they kind of had no choice, because of a larger problem with even doing the prequels in the first place: ALL the new characters they introduced absolutely HAD to be of little to no consequence, because we had never seen or heard of them before, in any of the films or other media. No matter how awesome Darth Maul looked, he could not have done anything to actually make an impact, just like Grievous or Jango Fett, they all had to be squeezed in neatly in very specific ways that could move the plot forward, but not actually do too much. Because if a guy named "Darth Maul" had actually been important, historically, then someone would have mentioned him in one of the "Real" movies. Since we'd never heard of him, he needed to be hastily shooed off-screen without any fanfare, never to be mentioned again.

It's a problem that comes with simply doing prequels at all. It's really hard to make use of any new, unfamiliar characters without causing plot holes. Everything has to be left exactly as it was when you came in. It's a frustrating problem, but it's the nature of the beast

I have a bit of an "Oh, another one" approach to SW stuff these days, say what some will about the Prequels, but when that Phantom Menace trailer first came out, it was after a decade of minimal activity from the brand. It's everywhere now, with comics, cartoons, video games etc, so that giddy feeling is'nt quite there with me, and there's always a worry that in between, we may have all been served with more intense stories via the works and worlds of the EU, where as the new trilogy might aim for the simpler approach for the sake of a populist audience. We'll just have to wait and see.

However, it looks visually impressive for the most part, and I liked the shots of the X-Wings, Falcon, and Stormtroopers

I've never read any of the expanded universe stories, is there any big loss that most of that stuff isn't canon anymore?

I believe so, I remember reading something about what they plan on doing, All the Star Wars related stuff will be spear headed by Disney and Lucasfilm, So that they all be connected.

Zarius: Yeah, totally, I remember *I* was specifically super-excited because I didn't really get into Star Wars "big" until they re-released the films in theaters and on VHS in '97 or so, I'd always wanted to but hadn't gotten around to it, so the re-release seemed a perfect jumping-in point. And then when Episode I came out, it was the first time anything SW had come out that I was really aware of and able to get excited for and experience first-hand. Other than a couple of the books (which are hit-or-miss for me) and a couple comics, there really wasn't much else to "get into". So the new movies coming out really got me amped up, as did the initial wave of new comics, and games, and cartoons, and toys...

......and then it all just KEPT coming and coming and coming, to the point where keeping up with it all would be a full-time job for anyone, and I kind of scaled back my fandom a little based on that. But we've definitely been spoiled the last 15 years on Star Wars. We more or less went from Famine to full-blown Feast literally overnight, and the Feast never stopped or even really slowed down. We've been OVER-saturated with the brand now. Even though more of it is Good than Not Good, it's just so MUCH.

So Yeah, I can totally understand there's a feeling of, "Oh, another one" as far as this new movie. I know I feel that way, and I really love Star Wars. I just can't get "up" for it like I used to because it used to be a huge deal. Now it's Just Another Movie. Especially when we know now they're going to be doing this annually until the end of time. Within 5 years, you're gonna have SO many people who never even want to hear the words "Star" and "Wars" in the same sentence, it's not even funny. But that's life.

Still excited. But yeah, Zar, I get what you mean.

Right on, that's what I'm worried about, we've had a lot of very high-concept and intense stories, some going above and beyond what SW has always been somewhat capable of in it's two trilogies. There's been material that tames the tar out of even "Empire", so tempered expectations for this are what is needed...it obviously has to appeal to a much broader audience, something the expanded material manages on and off depending on what kind of medium it serves. It can either way, I just don't want people getting bent out of shape if it is'nt quite "Splinter of the Mind's Eye", or, my personal favorite of the comics, "Dark Empire"

I'm with you on the on/off thing with the brand, there is so much of it trying to get into proves too intimidating. It's why I gradually pulled away from Transformers after Animated, even if I always heard good things about Prime, I was just spent on the over saturation, and the movies didn't help.

I wish the whole expanded universe, cartoons, and novels never happened. Star Wars should simply be the movies without any spinoff material.

SW movie is one thing, SW-comic book, video game, series, whatever is another. So for me, new SW movie is a pretty big thing.

EU was not lost entirely - I've heard they continue to make and rerelease EU stuff under brand SW Legends or something like that.

In any case - movies is what matters for me first and foremost.
