I'm hoping in future waves the paints are improved, similar to what they did with Mutagen Man and Cockroach Terminator.

I am working on Mystic Leo right now. I am going to sculpt his face myself because the current one is so terrible. So much is off in this figure. He has a cape. The back of his headband sticking out on the hood. His belt is wrong. It looks like a Happy Meal toy. I hope I can at least improve it a little bit with some sculpting and paint. ![]()

I understand it's a toy, but geez... What's actually happening here? Are these toys not selling well enough for Playmates to raise the bar? I wish I knew. Because it doesn't make sense, considering the popularity these things were gaining. I mean look at it. Are we being offered quality items or taken for suckers? (aka "If it's green, they'll buy it.") I'm not expecting adult collectible level material. Just paint the bandages at the very least! lol... It looks like someone 3D printed this. I think I've seen the best there is from this line and that was right after Tiger Claw was issued. That's too bad. Last edited by Splint'r; 02-01-2015 at 11:54 AM. |

I have to wonder how many people have given up collecting the modern line due to the lack of paint and the size issues with many of the mutants...
Seeing those Mystic Turtle figures just makes me sad. I knew Playmates could be cheap on paint, even in the 80s TMNT line there were parts they skipped over, but at least they still HAD paint on them. These recent figures look like unfinished prototypes you could buy off Chinese sellers on ebay. Heck, the new Party Wagon shows just how lazy Playmates has gotten in that it's just the 2014 TMNT Van with remolded parts...which is already incorrect. I didn't think too much on it until I saw the Party Wagon in the show. The orange door is on the wrong side, and the top of the van is completely different looking. |

my interest for the line dies more and more. I have no longer any interest to order the figures online to get them early, just ain't worth the extra cost. I'm heavily on the fence on figures I originally wanted. I did not buy the Stealth Tech Turtles as I'm losing interest in them as well. And I don't feel any need anymore to buy the Basic sized Battle Shell Turtles, still kinda (maybe, sorta) want them, but Playmates overall is leaving a sour taste.

The head-droppin' turtles are even worse - the pads, belts & bandannas are seperate pieces cast in the appropriate colour, and the only paint apps are the eyes - even the mouths aren't painted! I thought they might be pre-production models that hadn't had all the details applied, but no, they were the final production figures. |

So this opinion won't make me any friends, but I found the Mystic Turtles at a target in culver city ca, and I really like them. they have cool sculpts, with cool accessories. And though they aren't show accurate, customizers can get 'em pretty close with a little paint. and they have nice bright colors for kids, who the toys are intended for.
Would I rather they were completely show accurate and had amazing paint apps? Ofcourse. But many toy companies have made sacrifices recently, for the same reason all companies do, to stay in business and make money in the current market. I think playmates has done a good job striking a balance with the costs they have had to cut. Especially with the amount of product they're turning out. Personally i don't care for all of it (I could do without the mutations line) but I really like that they're basic figure line keeps churning out new characters and vehicles. There's much more variety available from turtles than any other action figure line I can think of that's out right now. I would much rather buy one of the creative toys with a great sculpt coming out of playmates, than the ugly/unimaginative stuff in Hasbro's basic star wars line. (Notice I said the basic line.) I won't argue that the black series isn't awesome, because it is. The black series is hasbro's collectors line though. If you compare that to playmates collectors line, (the classics series or 90's movie turtles), the black series may win out. If you can find them. If you thought finding classics Bebop and Rocksteady was hard, try finding any black series figure that isn't slave Leia. But for the basic figures I would pick Turtles these days over Star Wars. If you don't want to shell out $20-$25 for a collectors figure, this is what Hasbro has to offer you: http://news.toyark.com/2015/01/24/ne...figures-148791 And that's if you can find the ugly things. Most stores I go to just have whatever these completely unpainted micro machine figures are: http://news.toyark.com/2014/02/18/to...-images-118841 And if you want a vehicle or a playset for their basic figures, have fun making it yourself. I'm not trying to dump on Hasbro. The power of the force line will always be one of my favorites, and the amazing millennium falcon playset they put out 6 or 7 years ago is still one of my favorite pieces in my collection. And like I said I can't think of a company that hasn't made cut backs to it's basic line recently. I'd pick the basic turtles line over the basic batman or dc line as well. This is what I would call a Mcdonalds toy, a tiny figure with 4 points of articulation: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index...entPage=search I'm just saying that judging playmates next to it's peers, I don't think it falls short at all. I think it's still one of the best toy companies out there. Rant over. Please take my opinion for what it is, just an opinion. But I thought I'd share it incase anyone else out there felt like the only one who still really enjoys this toy line. |

BlueKatanas, you are entitled to your own opinion. Don't feel ashamed. You do make a good point. The turtles line is better than the recent Star Wars and Marvel toys. I mean, I was looking forward to buying some Avengers figures for the new film, and so far, they look like cheap toys you'd find in a dollar store. If they make Ultron, however, that will be a must.
As for Playmates, I get what they are doing. I understand why they're cutting corners and trying to play it smart to keep their business alive, but by the end of the day, the Mystic Turtles should have had better paint jobs. I'm not bothered by Karai or BaxterFly because they have major paint apps that are applied. Of course, Baxter could use painted hair, but maybe a sharpie or black paint will do the trick. That's just little to worry about. The Mystic Turtles, however, is like they gave up. Maybe it's just me, but one thing that makes the turtles look cool in the 2k12 series, physically, is their gear. I love their bandages, and the fact that most of theirs in the Vision Quest were either white, gray, tan, or off-white is different from the ones they typically wear on the show. I wanted to see that in the figures, but instead, we get nothing. It's just left unpainted. The worst part, it's not like Bebop where he has lines on his suit not painted, but it isn't that noticeable. As for the turtles, we immediately see those bandages not in white, not in grey, but in the color of their skin. That's a crime. I am willing to buy them so I can improve the paint jobs. Otherwise, I don't plan to change their accessories like Leo's cloak. That I can live with. ![]() But if you ask me, I'm more excited in buying an Ellen Ripley from Alien than I am for Serpent Karai.
