That "hat" would be the first thing I would remove if I got his figure. He looks alright with the original Frogs, so some apoxie, sone scalpel surgery and some paint, and won't have to worry about this ridiculous version of the character.

Just the prototype. This came up last year just after 2014 Toy Fair, which I mentioned then:

.... does anyone think they are using the battle shell bodies for these upcoming Turtle figures or they're just stand-ins for the fair? It is worth pointing out they have new heads and the LARP costumes are removable . New heads, old body?

Speaking of, hats.
I opened up Savage Mikey.
The head gear is removable revealing the sculpt used in the battle shell and Turflytle figures.
I thought it was a complete sculpt till I saw it was removable.

And. One quick hand swap later and the replacement of the hat...

Good grief. Playmates should just sell a damn accessory pack if they're gonna do this.

I like the variety . Sure , it's the same base figure. That's common practice. It keeps the line alive, vibrant and variable . You buy the ones you like, and everyone wins.

That's an interesting perspective. I will say for folks who are completionist(sp?), we're not just picking one figure, we're buying them all. And you're right, it's totally common to see figures, or vehicle molds for that matter repurposed. I've seen it across many lines. But I'd love for Playmates to mask it a little better. It's just too obvious. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of these figures. (not so much the novelty ones particularly). I really like the form factor, articulation, and weapons for sure. I'm not an angry nerd here, just feel a bit slighted when I see stuff like this.

Even Kenner did a better job in the 80's:

In any case, I really do appreciate the photos you post. It's fun to see new items before the hit the states. (or at least it seems you're getting them first?)

The figure on the left, as you probably know, is a gamorrean guard from Kenner's starwars line, the figure on the right is friar tuck from the robin-hood line released by kenner in the 80's.

The difference between Kenner in the 80's and Playmates now, is that they used the base to create a completely different character in a completely different franchise.

With savage Mikey from the cartoon, he is just Mikey wearing a hat and different belt basically, which is exactly what this figure is. I can understand people with OCD being compelled to purchase a figure that they pretty much already own, but what would you suggest they instead? Besides doing an accessory pack that was mentioned already, what could they possibly do to the base figure to make it different enough to warrant another purchase?

A different facial expression would help.

Meh. Maybe I'm the only one who has any beef with this. So probably not worth standing in front of the firing squad. haha... I will say, for my money, I'd rather have a figure with a different head or body sculpt. In addition, the accessory pack idea has followed lines like barbie and G.I. Joe for years with great success.

You made a good point about difference in franchise. I suppose I was just giving an example of how a figure was repurposed, and tooled well enough that it wasn't especially obvious.

Every time I purchase a turtle figure, no joke, I step back for a second to appreciate the marketing genius behind all of this. We purchase 4 turtle figurines, which clearly hold dear nostalgic value to us all; however, the only delineating factor between them is the color of their bandana, and their weapons/accessories they're packaged with. As a result, we, the buyers, identify them as separate entities. I get a big kick out of that. I wonder if anyone else would agree?

That was an interesting read. I liked the image of Dechlan, I mean Tuck and the Star Wars Guard. Id never seen that before.

As for the current wave, I opened up 4 of the 6 and put on my 'doubles' shelf, and placed the Beavers at the back. (still have the spare two in my office).

On reuse of base figures tho... aren't the original 80s Turtles the same base figure, painted differently to look 'different' haha!!

On a different tact, because I had 10 2003 figures arrive in the past couple of day; I've had both teachers and students commenting on how much better the older ones are compared to the current ones (I have a few in my office !!).
Personally, I don't fully agree.
Monkey Brains is a solid figure. He feels good, and I think looks as good as Sgt Bananas and holds his own against older figures.
Napoleon was commented on as looking very basic. When I compared it against a 2003 figure that was declared as better, it was clear that there was little between them.

Anyways - just thought I'd mention that the current wave is, in my opinion, comparable with the 2003 range and a lot of the 90s figures.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves was put out in 1991. The whole toyline took old Star Wars, Robocop, Superpowers figures and gave them new headsculpts, and paint jobs and some fabric pieces (mostly from Superpowers). The Sherwood forest playset was an Ewok Village and the battle wagon combined with the catapult was also an Ewok vehicle and seperate catapult set.

I can't wait to find all those new figures you have, in stores. For now I am searching out more mousers.
