Neither is Batman himself, by that argument. Just a rich guy with a brilliant mind who has WAAAY too much time on his hands, and some serious mental issues. The MIB's defend against alien threats with tech WAAY beyond what is available/known on Earth, so- yeah. Superheroes all the way, man. The GB's are no different. They defend people from things that most folks can't deal with. Like, I dunno, the ghosts of dead Carpathian tyrants who try to resurrect themselves by taking over the bodies of helpless infants. Or ancient gods who decide to start up the end of the world through a giant marshmallow man. Stuff that NORMAL people can't even HOPE to handle!!

Actually, YES, it DOES. Ecto has more than JUST the PKE and bigger proton pack weapon. We just don't see most of it. I know it also carries spares of all their gear, serves as a mobile base with all the miscellaneous equipment Ray and Egon felt like installing, and also can be used to "attract" ghosts. (If I recall the cartoon right. I seem to remember an episode where they were driving it around getting ghosts to follow it.)

Ecto doesn't NEED those other abilities- it's intended to assist in the GBs' job- catching GHOSTS/DEMONS, which are usually incorporeal and/or capable of possessing humans, throwing objects around, or other activities that most of Batman's villains can't do. Ecto is a weapon itself, Ie, it has it's own portable containment unit, as well as "souped-up" versions of their normal gear. That's all it NEEDS to do. Not drive up walls, go super speed (Which is actually pretty ridiculous for a vehicle driving in New York, anyway- traffic ALONE would make that impossible! To say nothing of the lay-out and size of most city streets....), and the like.
I did not know that other stuff about the Ectomobile. It's been literally years and years since I've seen the cartoon.

Driving up or over walls would still be useful I think. Since ghosts can fly and go through objects. Super speed can go either way. I mean most cities have traffic. The Batmobile is larger and wider than a normal car anyway, regardless of the speed.

I agree the things they do are super heroic. I still doubt most people really consider the franchise in the same boat as Batman and the others though. Same with MIB. I've only seen these labeled as horror and alien action movies.

I mean you do not see people referring to Ghostbusters as one the great superhero movies of the 80s. It's always horror, comedy or general sci-fi.

Why on Earth would they need to drive the car up or over walls? Just because a ghost can go through them doesn't mean the car would be useful for that. Most of the ghosts they went after were tied to specific locations anyway, so they would be going far. And you can't drive a car IN buildings, which is where most ghosts would be. They'd have better luck riding a horse around indoors..... I can think of a few times in the cartoon where the car was useful for "chasing" ghosts (like Nexa or Samhain), but usually it was just to GET to where they were.

I didn't mean inside buildings. I meant if they were chasing ghosts with the turret blaster (controlled from the inside, not with someone on top) and it went through a blocking wall or up high somewhere.

The Batmobile does not go through or inside buildings either but its tough enough to break through and overcome obstacles in its way.

Yeah, I know what you meant, but since most ghosts are INSIDE buildings, having the car go up the walls OUTSIDE is- pretty pointless. Not to mention dumb and dangerous, since gravity would take over because you can't drive fast enough to avoid falling, no matter what that scene in Batman might have you believe. Only high-powered rockets could do that, and it would take something like a large jet engine for a car to do so, which would burn out VERY fast. Ever watch jet-fuel dragsters? They break down frequently, often on the track. Now try that on the side of a building.....

The problem with trying to compare the two is that they were built to serve two entirely different purposes. Ecto is for capture of ghosts and transport temporarily, until they can be placed in more secure containment. The Batmobile is for high-speed chases, busting down barriers to get to bad guys in their hideouts, and of course evading pursuit or avoiding harm. It's bulletproof and fast for a reason- because the bad guys would just LOVE to make a Bat-pizza out of Bruce. Ghosts aren't shooting at or trying to blow up the GB's.... Just, y'know- sliming them, LOL!

@MsMarvelDuckie, ya your right about gravity. Adding a jet engine to the Ectomobile would be weird. I was thinking more of the hook thing like in Batman Forever.

I could see armor being useful if ghosts throw projectile like attacks or just generally getting hit by something on the road. Ghosts could pick up things and toss them. Not buildings.

@Autbot Benz, I said Ectomobile to generalize it. It's Ecto-1 in first movie but 1-A in the sequel. Not sure in the cartoons. Anyway I've seen it be called Ectomobile before.

Meh, too cartoony. GB has always been more grounded in the "real world" of everyday life, as opposed to some shadowy comic-style world. Armor MIGHT come in handy for the bigger creepies like Nexa, but would be unnecessary for most. Most ghosties are just the booga-boo scary type, anyway. Very few of them from either the movies or series were physically dangerous. It was more a matter of getting them away from terrified civilians, than any kind of damage they could do. Vigo and Gozar excepted, of course. Heck, I even recall seeing Jacob Marley and the Christmas Three, and THOSE they actually had to let loose again! So not ALL ghosts even NEED to be caught or contained. Some were actually good. And then there were the truly EVIL ones, like Nexa, Samhain, and a few others that were almost Gozar-level.

Ya the hook is a bit over the top. I still think armor would be good. I can see ghosts or even a more threatening villain wanna attack the car. Some chase scene like this would be cool. I'm pretty sure there were chases in the cartoon I just don't recall any.

I hope the new movies do more with the car. The originals did nothing. They never elaborated about it. Thats always bothered me. All that stuff on the car and its never touched on. In the movies, regardless of the cartoon.

Yeah, The Ecto-1 was a cool vehicle.

The vehicle used for the Ecto-1 was a 1959 Cadillac professional chassis, built by the Miller-Meteor company. The ambulance/hearse combination was the end loader variety. Dr. Ray Stantz found the vehicle shortly after he mortgaged his mother's house to buy the Firehouse. Because of his mechanical skills, he was able to repair the vehicle, which he acquired for $4,800.[1]

After repairs were completed, the vehicle had quite a unique character. It became a well-recognized symbol for the Ghostbusters franchise. The vehicle had enough room in it to store Proton Packs for all of the crew, along with Ecto Goggles', P.K.E. Meters, and a slew of Traps.

Obviously, that'd be kinda like their Bat-Plane or something.

Christ, I had all those f*cking vehicles. What a menagerie of nonsensical tomfoolery that line was. I even had that goddamn Volkswagen that turned into a giant praying mantis.
