I actually really liked Donnie in this episode, he was so silly it made me giggle. To me it seems like you guys just absolutely hate your precious Donnie and Mikey to be adorable silly lumps. Their faces, their voices, and their lines are silly and adorable, I enjoyed it.

You guys need to stop being such debbie downers and lighten up and actually laugh once in awhile. TMNT is not some Game of Thrones episode with incest, murder, betrayal, and dragons. Get yer mind outta the gutter!
Mikey does not need to be a goofball 99% of the time. He wasn't in OT, 2k3 or old live action movies. Plus some just don't like the goofball humor a lot of cartoons recently.

Re-read my complaint about references. Here they're full blown representations...not just references that poke fun. Clear difference.

Those are the traits that I really like in Mikey but they're often overplayed. A lot of us are frustrated that him making a goof and trying to fix it has already been done about 5 times...and I'm sure it'll be done about 5 more times before the show is finished. Someone mentioned it could be because the show is written by a bunch of different writers who all have their own take on how Mikey acts. I could see that being a small a issue.

A recent episode that I think Mikey was well written was Attack of the Mega Shredder. His goofy behaviour was shown in passing instead of being the cause of the conflict.
>Mikey tripping over a footbot head because he was clumsy
>Mikey accidentally getting snuggled by Rahzar
>Mikey following and joining up with Leo to snatch a brain worm.
>Mikey getting eaten by mega shredder

I'm sure another writer would have probably had him trying to tickle Rahzar's nose to bother him while he sleeps and then he wakes up, alerting all of shredder's forces and ruining leo's plan.

*nod* Would not surprise me if multiple writers is a factor.

IMO, being a loveable goofball should be harmless, frequently charming, and happen intentionally by the character because it's just who they are. And Mikey does have this of course.

Unfortunately these days the concept of being a "loveable goofball" appears to be mistaken for (or rewritten as/in addition to) a character unintentionally being a "bumbling idiot."

Like, I dunno... having him help Donnie in the lab and just being too playful about it or distracted by something to Donnie's disadvantage/annoyance rather than straight up destroying the lab.

Agreed. I get so tired of them always writing him as an idiot, when it's much better to have him cracking jokes and pulling pranks for humor, where it doesn't make him out as stupid, but still gets across that he's fun-loving and a little impish. You can have someone acting "goofy" WITHOUT also being DUMB.

  • "Remember when he turned Raph into a plant? Good times." No they weren't Mikey. No they weren't.
  • I was wondering when The Creep was coming back.
  • "I could use a fresh sample of your DNA..." Smooooth Donatellooo!
  • Ice Cream Kitty! Can't be a very good freezer if she begins to melt that quickly.
  • What the hell is wrong with Donnie?
  • Why aren't any of the keys on the Shellraiser's keyboard labeled???
  • Was that a mutagen-covered ant hill?
  • "I'M MELTING! MELTING!"
  • Sooo, Ice Cream Kitty melts when the freezer is open but not when she's on Donnie's head? THAT makes sense! xD
  • Duke Nukem reference!
  • That burn from Donnie at the end xD

Not the best episode, but still pretty fun. Glad it's not the finale, no idea why Wiki had it listed as the last episode not that long ago.

Being written by different writers is no excuse. They should all know how the characters work and should work by now. There's certain consistency that's being kept within this show such as Leo maintaining his ninja practices as opposed to watching cartoons like he used to in the first two seasons or Don holding off on being infatuated with April. I would like to see that with Mikey but I guess some things never change.

Dayum I didn't know those existed. I think I'd be pretty good with one of those.

I don't think Mikey knows what "good times" means.

So apparently Mikey can just throw anything together and it turns out to be the useful thing they needed at the time. That totally doesn't come off contrived... Nope. I'm also not buying his photographic memory being the real deal... (Ooh, gum!) If it was, he'd be able to recreate the super-retromutagen. Believe me, I like to see Mikey showing some intelligence, but watching him throw sceince at the wall and have it come out better than anything Donnie can come up with after actually working for it is irritating and spotlight-stealing.

Still trying to work out why that potion made Donnie derpier before miraculously curing him...

Other stuff, though...

MU...mu..mu TA... ta... ta... GEN... gen... gen...
I forget, did the Creep do this in his first ep?

Not gonna call these references, but I associate the "Squirrel!" line with "Up", and the "I like french fries!" line with zombie kid's "I like turtles!"

Was there any background on where the grasskicker came from? Seems kind of out of left field (pardon the pun).

No "Narf!", but there's a second of Pinky-esque laughter in there...

WTH, Splinter?! You're not even going to try the healing mantra?? Just leave Donnie dumb and let things sort themselves out on their own?? Some dad...

"Are we gardeners or ninjas?!" You tell me, Raph... you're the one with the faining tools...

All in all, I'm left pretty unimpressed with this ep.

Dr. Don, by Lokrume. She's just released the last two chapters. Excellent fic.

It's possible he only recognizes the chemicals by sight rather by name. In Battle for New York Donnie had asked Mikey what chemicals he had used and Mikey tries to list off what chemicals he used but didn't have a clear idea of the chemical names. But if he had been asked to show what chemicals he used he probably could have indicated what he had used while he was playing with Donnie's chem set.

At this point, someone should make a thread on here having people create quotes, dialogue, and scenes the way they feel Mikey's character should be and how he should be written, and then let others judge based on the diatribe, if it's in character or not. Make a game out of it.

Because so many on here seem to have their own idea, and I have a sneaky suspicion that 90-95% of that group would fare no better at walking on that chalk line.

Saying how a character is supposed to be is one thing, putting it in dialogue is another and all that matters.

Someone really should, this would be fun.

So he's basically Jesse Pinkman?

This is what I was thinking. He could've seen Donnie mixing chemicals A, B, and C and did the same, but not sure on what they were by name.

In teaching, you deal with a different array of students with different learning styles. You have those who are auditory learners while some understand things by being hands on and others understand best by reading the material. In Mikey's case, he strikes me as a visual learner. He gets stuff better if he sees it. If he has a photographic memory, it makes sense. I also could see him being a handson learner...his nunchucks.

As I've said before, the nunchuck is one of the most difficult weapons to master. You need a lot of focus and concentration to master them. Given Mikey for this series, how did he manage that?

And Mikey did demonstrate signs that he's an idiot savant. Even Andre the black nerd has described Mikey as such in his recent video.

After all he Mikey is a person who is considered to be mentally handicapped but displays brilliance in a specific area, especially one involving memory.

I didn't see the first 5 minutes, so missed the Mikey-messed-up moment, but from what I did see, I thought this was a sweet episode. Donnie losing his mental capacity was quite touching and it was nice to see a more child-like, playful version of him, and to see his brothers recognise the importance and value of the role he plays in the team.

Interesting moment with Raph inviting the Creep to defeat him... A new darker dimension for Nick Raph?

Shame they couldn't find a different angle for a Mikey-centric episode though.

Nice episode, not the best but by no means the worst.

Didn't think it was an invite to defeat him. But rather a subtle way of Raph wanting to go mono-a-mono with the monster that gave him trouble back in Within the Woods with the whole 'turned into a plant' thing.
