Oh HELLS yes it was real.
Kind of like Finn and Poe.
I've seen actual SUPERTEXT Gay that's less gay than the subtext in that movie.

This ET interview suggest that 1. We know Rey's parents already 2. That her parents will not be fully identified until Episode 9. The only loophole in rhe director's statement would be if her parents or a parent is introduced in Episode 8. I am still of the belief Luke is her father. Thw mother however could be anyone's guess.

There are only two female characters in the entire original trilogy; that Resistance leader Mon Mothra or whatever and Leia.

The mom is going to be a complete unknown, regardless of who her daddy is. Unless it's one of the characters from Episode 7.

Maybe Rey is... the daughter of Luke and Leia?

I was about to say Star Trek did it better, but Uhura was pretty much a glorified telephone operator. Troi just spoke about feelings and showed off cleavage... I guess Crusher was okay? And Pulaski? Thank the Prophets for Kira Nerys and Dax.

By today's standards Uhura wasn't doing a whole heck of a lot, but when Trek was actually on the air....she was revolutionary. Still is, in my opinion.

Trek did so many boundaries, but was still a product of its time.
Which says quite a bit when one realizes the NuTrek movie costumes don't have rank insignia on their women's costumes.

Back to Star Wars...

My vote is Parthenogenesis. If Anakin didn't have a father, as his mother maintains in the Prequel, then I don't see why Rey would need one either.

The last thing they're going to do is reference something in the prequels.

Yes, Uhura was revolutionary at the time. Hell, MLK congratulated her in person on her role.

Back to Wars... that would be interesting.

I'm going to be a pedant here but... aside from Leia and Mon Mothma, there was Aunt Beru, Oola, Toryn Farr, Yarna del Gargan, Mara Jade (if you're into the EU), the Tonnika Sisters, Leesub Sirln, Cammy (if you count cut scenes), the backup singers in the Special Edition version of Jedi in Jabba's Palace (Lyn Me, Greeata, Rystall), and at least one member of the Endor strike team is female, and a couple of pilots in the Death Star 2 attack. Now admittedly only the first five actually have any speaking parts...

Background extras with no lines do not count.
Extended Universe characters do not count.
Oola does not count; she's Rancor fodder. A woman in a refrigerator, if you will.

Without bothering to look up ANY of those other names...

I'll give you Aunt Beru. That's it.

Characters that don't pass The Sexy Lamp test don't count.

At the moment, good sir, a criticism of Star Wars' previous malecentric film universe.

Ah, I see. So, are we all under the impression that Rey is a good thing for the franchise then?

Criticisms of the writing of Episode 7 aside, I am all in favor of Rey.

OK cool. Just wanted to make sure I didn't miss out on some kind of huge backlash that has coloured the conversation around the movie in the last week or so. Though I'm sure there are many others.
