No.

Changes made because of political agenda should not be the norm.
Especially, when those changes motivated not by ideology, but desire to earn progressive cookies with batshit insane crowd in the Internet.

So, another case of race-washing/change? It's getting old and I've already said what I think about such subject a few times in the past on these forums. Don't feel like repeating my points.

It's funny, though, how people who talk about representation and push for it seem to only care about black people. But they don't seem to care about East Asians, Indians, Arabs and other Middle Eastern ethnic groups, Samoans, Central Asians, etc. It's like only White and Black people exist in their world and the rest of the world doesn't exist. It's literally a black and white world to them. Someone explain this to me, please. Some people say that black people are underrepresented in the American media but I've seen WAY more black actors and characters in the American media than I've seen of other racial minorities that live in that country.

Funny isn't it?
For all their cries about stopping "American Cultural Imperialism", they act like only US culture and history matters and should be represented.

But its not like those people are strangers to hypocrisy. On contrary - they breath it.

Yeah, you nailed it. And those same people pretty much try to "impose" their views on non-American media as well. Remember the complains about the lack of Black people in The Witcher or whatever?

Gotta love the whining about including people of color in the Witcher show (despite poc exists in the games) but all the "historically accurate" crowd was very quiet about inclusion of potatoes in the games. Since, Y'know, potatoes wasn't around i Poland during the time Witcher is based on.

I really didn't care for the Broadway adaptation of The Little Mermaid since it was Disney's weakest show next to Tarzan, but Sierra Boggess, who originated the role of Ariel on Broadway and who is my favorite Christine Daae from Phantom of the Opera, had this to say about the casting decision.

When someone compares people to potatoes, you know their arguments are weak.

I've heard about someone complaining that there were no black people in Chernobyl series, which takes place in Ukraine, which is known for having a big population of black people...oh wait...

It'd be one thing if Disney didn't restrict the auditions for the role of Ariel to white women only... like, if they truly wanted to cast the best actress for the role. But that's not what they did... they only auditioned black actresses.

Y'all being played, this was done on purpose to generate controversy and people would talk about it. It's been the marketing 101 go to trick for the past few years now. Whether you're against it or for it you talk about it and that's all the multinational corporations care about. In the end it works in their favor, people who said they hate it will watch it anyway, people who wouldn't watch it will watch it to make a point while Disney cashes in as much money as they can from this bankrupt idea.

Geeze. I honestly could care less either way, I never watched The Little Mermaid when it first came out, and probably won't see this either, but, I am with those who think Disney is being very shallow with this. If they really did care about these issues, then they would be sending their teams scouring the books written by Black authors and look into striking a deal with them and turning their original works into movies. But, Disney is being run by businessmen now, and no longer artists, and it's just easier to buy works that already exist and worked instead of risking in new properties.

This is true. With the massive Hispanic community that is in the USA, and the fact that some of the biggest hits on youtube, CD's, etc are from Hispanic culture, you would think Hollywood would be trying to tap into that market, but they have barely scratched the surface. But, Hispanics aren't as vocal, and made their own stuff anyways, like Robert Rodriguez.

Exactly. That's my biggest gripe with this stupid ass push for "diversity" because lately, diversity just means black, female, and gay. People complain when characters get changed, period. But if the complaint stems from casting a black person as a character who isn't traditionally black, then all the f*cking casuals come out and embrace it and single out the white people and call them racist. And then they make it about the poor black folk who have been underrepresented in the past which is complete utter f*cking bullsh*t. Why don't these people support black films then? Why is Black Panther the only one to have made noise and pass a billion for doing nothing original at all? Why did Ghostbusters flop so hard when everyone was being called sexist for not liking the all female direction? Where was the support? Or do people just like b*tching at others on the internet about sh*t they don't give 2 f*cks about just to fuel their own egos and get points with their "poor" minority friends? I'm so f*cking tired of this same argument.

A statement was released on the Disney-owned channel Freeform.

Ariel can sneak up to the surface at any time with her pals Scuttle and the *ahem* Jamaican crab Sebastian (sorry, Flounder!) and keep that bronze base tight. Black Danish people, and thus mer-folk, can also *genetically* (!!!) have red hair. But spoiler alert – bring it back to the top – the character of Ariel is a work of fiction. So after all this is said and done, and you still cannot get past the idea that choosing the incredible, sensational, highly-talented, gorgeous Halle Bailey is anything other than the INSPIRED casting that it is because she “doesn’t look like the cartoon one”, oh boy, do I have some news for you…about you.

Not denying that wanting to appear more progressive was probably one of the factors for this...but so much now is labeled as PC agenda.

Surely some of it is just people online reading way too much into stuff so they can complain and act like it’s a conspiracy to brainwash fandoms.

I mean I could probably go back to stuff from the 90s and accuse things of being a certain way. If you’re actively looking for something to be against it’s easy.

There can be white Africans (South Africa comes to mind), so does that mean Black Panther can be white? I don't want that, but saying there are black danish people isn't an argument. And pointing and screaming "racist!" at anyone who doesn't see it their way is an overplayed card that holds no power. I'm not interested in anything any Disney representative has to say about the casting, of course they would defend it.

I absolutely agree that latino and asian americans are vastly underrepresented. Just look at MCU films... very few latino or asian characters, despite many instances of race changes in the characters. Disney is by no means an authority on proper representation.

What a petulantly childish, smug, self-congratulatory and accusatory statement.

Given the headlines I've seen of Disney refusing to allow an image of Spider-Man on a dead child's tombstone, boy do I have news for them..about them
