I don't see them doing that either, I just don't wanna deal with him.
![]() As I've said before, at the absolute best, even if I see it on TV one day and it's generally "alright", I'm still gonna be wishing the entire cast of this thing was entirely different. Cast is a huge factor in anything I watch, and I just don't agree with a single casting choice they've made. It is what it is, at this point. I'm pretty sure I'm done with comic book movies. Although most movies in general are pretty lousy recently, so I don't think it's a genre thing. I just think the Disney monopoly is having huge negative effects on the entire industry a lot faster than anyone expected. I'm not surprised that TV and streaming are having such a boost at the moment, but that's a whole other conversation. |

What’s Grace Randolph’s track record with leaks? She is also out there peddling the potential of a Snyder cut pretty hard. She either knows someone or is a huge liar. Obviously. I’m just not sure which.

Apparently John Turturro is a fantastic, award-winning actor. I'd only seen him in silly roles, but I should have taken the time to look into it. That's cool.
He'll still have to do a great job to convince me he isn't...himself, but it sounds like he has the chops. |

And yeah, "we need to give Pattinson 2 more weeks to bulk up" sounds like they've got to call a certain superhero for the save.

It won’t be an origin story but you can be certain they’ll still find a way to flashback to Batman’s origin and show his parents get shot when he was 8 at some point in the movie. It seems to be some mandate that audiences are constantly reminded of how Bruce lost his parents with slight variations over and over until the end of time. I wonder what “spin” they’ll put on it this time.

And, you're right - nothing wrong with leaving the door open. I suppose it's just natural to get nervous about anyone other then Marvel doing it. Nothing wrong with building out a universe, in theory. |

But yeah, I'm totally okay with this. Arkham Asylum has been pretty underutilized in all of the Batman movies so far.

If they'd simply adapt "The Last Arkham" as-is, with no deviation and simply use those four issues as a storyboard, they'd have an easy slam dunk and they'd take home well over a billion dollars. Other than "Hush", it's probably the best and simplest Batman story to adapt into a film project... IF the filmmakers don't try to be smarter than the material.
But the prevalent "We have to water things down so it's not Too Dark/We need to make random arbitrary changes so that we can appeal to non-comics fans" sort of over-thinking will prevent that kind of thing from ever happening. That story has everything that they claim they want to or are trying to do with this project. It can be so much simpler than they're making it. It really all comes down to simple arrogance. "Well if those comic book guys were Real Writers, they'd be making movies instead of those dang funnybooks! We'd be stupid to use any of their stuff, we have to 'fix' it." No, you really don't. For one thing, not a single TV or film adaptation has ever - EVER - been better than its source material, especially with comic book stuff. And secondly, people in the comics industry don't get rich and famous for writing scripts for projects that never even get made, which is standard operating procedure in Hollywood. Guys living in giant mansions who've never had a single script get shot. I guess that does take a certain kind of "genius" to pull off, but it does not mean you're good at the job. Eh. Meh. |

Oh, GOD, that "Hush" adaptation was horrible.
I'm sure that a few fans really DO want to be "surprised", but I've been doing this a long time, and I can safely say Those Fans are NOT even close to the majority. For most fans, they want to see the stories that they love "come to life", that's entirely the appeal. They don't want to be "swerved", to use wrestling terminology. They don't want to see Aunt May hire an assassin to kill Uncle Ben for his insurance money, just because it would be a "surprise". They want to see the things they love on paper brought to life in living, moving color. It really is Just That Simple. These movie writers are like a guy who runs a pizza place, who thinks it's "silly" for a customer to only ever order a plain cheese pizza, so one day they "do them a favor" and send them a pizza with the works, "just to be different." "What's wrong with you, asshole, I didn't order this!" the customer would rightly complain. "Well, I figured you would appreciate something different! Bet you were surprised!" the pizza guy would reply, oblivious to how stupid they sound. That obviously wouldn't happen because it would be terrible for business. But these movie hacks would do well to take a lesson: "People like what they like, don't get cute, just give them what they asked for, not what you THINK they might like better, that's not your f*cking job." |

I'm really not that interested in seeing comic book stories adapted on screen, verbatim. It would have to selfishly be one of my absolute favorite stories, or something so challenging to adapt as to pique my curiosity, otherwise I rather just see something original, with elements lifted and inspired from the comics. You know, like most comic book movies. The only exception that comes to mind is Watchmen, which, I appreciate as a companion piece to the book, but is dull in its slavery to the source material.
I think, as a creator, I'd want to tell my own Batman story, not decide the best has already been done and tell the same exact story over. And as an audience member, I'm more interested in seeing something new than a desperate imitation of another medium. Just my two cents. Besides, only fkn 5 year olds stick to cheese pizza. Grow some taste buds, ya little bastards. Some of us want something a little more flavorful. Last edited by AquaParade; 11-26-2019 at 06:49 PM. |

I know, you're on record that in your opinion, anything "New and Different" is automatically better than anything "familiar".
You're entitled to that opinion, but you're also One Person. And people who get paid a lot more money than I do who've specifically spent years and millions of dollars to study human behavior conclusively and repeatedly have stated that People Don't Like Surprises. Regardless of one or two people who always feel like piping in, "Well *I* do!" Good for you. It's sh*tty that other people have to suffer and never get what they want because a vocal minority would rather have everything be upside-down and inside-out, Because Different. Minority opinions should not dictate what the majority receives. If a person truly wants a Batman story that bears no resemblance to the source material beyond the name "Batman", write a fanfic. Don't f*ck everything up for the rest of us. |

Like I said, most comic book movies find a balance between those two things. Dark Knight, Logan, MCU, name 99% of comic movies and they aren't slavish adaptions. I like those. I know I'm one person. You are also one person, right? We are both entitled to our opinions. You were speaking for what fans want, so it doesn't make sense to frame this as if I am trying to speak for everyone. And to be clear, I don't think anything is automatically better than anything else. I mean, obviously. But I do prefer new and original to retread and lack of ingenuity, yeah. I'm going to assume all that stuff about "good for you, people dont like surprises, your minority opinion shouldn't make the rest of us suffer" is not directed at me. Right, but what I'm saying is, there's actual factual evidence that most human beings, regardless of topic, want Exactly What They Want and would rather just get that instead of someone trying to "surprise" them. It's proven, the conversation about it is closed, but someone always has to chime in, "Not ME, I love surprises!" Alright, fine, but you're an outlier in the grand scheme of things, so why should your opinions, wants and needs take precedence?
Obviously not anything can ever be 1:1 with it's source material, but the farther away you get, the less of a point there is even adapting something. Like "Hush"; that was NOT "Hush", it bore no resemblance at all outside of two brief scenes. It was SO different that calling it "Hush" was not only an insult, it was blatant false advertising. NOW, is it an acceptable animated feature in and of itself? Yeah, sure... If you call it something else and don't try to steal from fans by advertising your own New And Different Thing as a thing that a lot of people already love and have waited almost twenty years to see adapted PROPERLY. You say Watchmen was boring; I say, the show is a piece of sh*t that has no reason to exist and the film was exactly what it was supposed to be, otherwise the name "Watchmen" had no business being on the marquee. "Batman Begins" did well by taking huge bits of Year One and other stories, but didn't market itself as "Year One", that would have been lying. "Dark Knight Rises" wasn't called "KnightFall". "Logan" wasn't called "Old Man Logan". You raise certain expectations when you attach a familiar title to an original piece of work, and if you aren't going to play it "straight", simply don't promote something as something it's not. And as good as Dark Knight and DKR were, and how well they did for themselves in portraying a "real life" Batman story, they STILL weren't perfect, and just about all the missteps they made in those films were in places where they deviated from the comics despite not actually needing to do so. DKR, especially. They thought that they were smart, when they'd have done much better if they'd kept closer to the books. "Begins" was a near-perfect adaptation, "Dark Knight" was fine but some of their concessions to "realism" ultimately hurt it, and "Rises" was so far out of bounds that it's barely even recognizable as "Batman". As the trilogy went along, they insisted on getting further and further away from the source material, and it hurt a lot more than it helped. They didn't NEED to make some of those choices, they were just "to be different". Well, DKR was certainly "different and unexpected", but... It's a pooch. Easily the worst of its trilogy by miles and miles. But it could have been the best one... IF they didn't insist that they knew better and simply kept it closer to the books. It isn't rocket science. This kind of sh*t annoys me as a Batman fan because, despite a few movies that were Good or Really Good, we've only seen a Batman that was close to the comic books exactly twice: Batman Begins and BvS. And I have always wanted to see Comic Book Batman in live action. All the other films either ignore the books and make up their own thing, OR, like Nolan, fundamentally misunderstand the Bruce Wayne character and his motivation to the point where you can barely trace it back to the source material at all. I'm a comic book fan for almost 40 years. I'm not allowed to get the movies I want to see because a handful of people think that presenting things As They Are is "boring". That annoys me, and I won't apologize for feeling that way. Obviously nothing can ever be 1:1 and that's understandable, but it's stupid to arbitrarily change things that are Perfectly Fine just because a small handful of people would rather see their fanfic ideas on screen. Things that aren't broken don't need "fixing" just because they're "old" or "familiar". Especially when, as with "Hush", those pointless changes don't make a single thing better and actually ruin the entire story. Bottom line, a new idea isn't by default a better idea just by virtue of its New-ness. And anyone who wants to convince me otherwise can save the stamp. I know what I like, and I know what I want. Which is why I'm done with these stupid movies in the first place. It's fine, they don't need my money. I'm just saying, I'm not exactly hard to win over, I just don't want my intelligence or my taste insulted by some Hollywood Hack. I'd gladly get excited for these movies if they looked anything at ALL like the stuff I already enjoy. Ultimately, it's fine. I honestly do enjoy reading far more than watching TV or movies, anyway. It's just annoying, is all. |
